With Steelers starting center Maurkice Pouncey injured, the individual matchup between backup Doug Legursky and Packers nose tackle B.J. Raji has been identified by many as the single most important one-on-one battle of Super Bowl Sunday.
But Raji and Legursky may not go one-on-one very often.
Raji is listed as a nose tackle, but he doesnt always line up directly over the center. In fact, J.J. Cooper of FanHouse went back and looked at all 61 snaps that Raji played in the NFC Championship Game and found that Raji was heads-up on the center on only 11 plays. Bears center Olin Kreutz was only responsible for blocking Raji on seven plays.
So Steelers guards Ramon Foster and Chris Kemoeatu may do battle with Raji just as often as Legursky does, and even tackles Flozell Adams and Jonathan Scott will match up with him at times.
After confirming on Friday that Pouncey is out and Legursky is in, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said he was confident that his line could block Raji, no matter who drew the assignment.
We have a plan, Tomlin said, and that wont change.
