Another Madden Jinx hopefully..

http://blog.games.yahoo.com/blog/355-steelers-will-win-super-bowl-xlv-predicts-madden-11/

Forget Punxsutawney Phil -- Madden 11, EA's pigskin prognosticator, has emerged from its burrow just in time to make its annual wintery pick.

And it's going with Pittsburgh.

According to the simulation, the Steelers storm back from an early fourth quarter deficit to narrowly beat the Green Bay Packers, 24-20, nabbing their record seventh Vince Lombardi Trophy. With five catches for 111 yards -- including the game-winning TD -- Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace wins the MVP.

EA Sports has been using Madden to predict the Super Bowl winner for years now, and the famed football franchise is proving eerily good at it. Not only has Madden correctly picked six of the last seven winners, it's actually been quite close on the final scores in a few of them.

Super Bowl XXXVIII
Madden: Patriots 23, Panthers 20
Actual Score: Patriots 32, Panthers 29

Super Bowl XXXIX
Madden: Patriots 47, Eagles 31
Actual score: Patriots 24, Eagles 21

Super Bowl XL
Madden: Steelers 24, Seahawks 19
Actual score: Steelers 21, Seahawks 10

Super Bowl XLI
Madden: Colts 38, Bears 27
Actual score: Colts 29, Bears 17

Super Bowl XLII -- WHOOPS
Madden: Patriots 38, Giants 30
Actual score: Giants 17, Patriots 14

Super Bowl XLIII
Madden: Steelers 28, Cardinals 24
Actual score: Steelers 27, Cardinals 23

Super Bowl XLIV
Madden: Saints 35, Colts 31
Actual score: Saints 31, Colts 17

So it botched the underdog Giants victory in 2008, but check out the scores of the two recent Pittsburgh wins. Madden might not be Grays Sports Almanac, but with that kind of track record, we're not inclined to bet against it.

Hmmmm. Well, there has to be an exception to every rule, and I accidentally skipped over the Giants "WHOOPS". The Packers will be that exception.
Green Bay: Home of the Green & Gold. And the hunter orange. And the camouflage.

I was thinking that the last 10 or so Super Bowls, one team was far more the favorite than this year.

Outside of their respective fanbases, who really thought ...
[ul]Panthers > Patriots
Eagles > Patriots
Seahawks > Steelers
Bears > Colts
Giants > Patriots
Cardinals > Steelers
Colts > Saints[/ul]

I wanted the Giants to win, but if I had to put money down, at the time, I'd probably put it on the Patriots, the rest of them would have been the team on the right getting my money place upon.

This year Madden is predicting the underdog to win and it'll be wrong.

Great point, and if I recall correctly, the Panthers, Seahawks, Bears, and Cardinals were MAJOR underdogs. Almost nobody expected those teams to win. The only upset was the Giants, and they got that wrong.

Even though the Packers are favored by Vegas it still feels like they are the underdog to me. Most people seem to be picking the Steelers and talking about their past experiences with the SB compared to GB. If PITT wins nobody is going to be shocked. Madden is hardly going out on a limb here again.

Accuscore runs 10,000 simulations to predict a game winner. They are a little off at the beginning of a season because they use last years numbers, but as the season progresses they get more accurate.

Accuscore's record on the year was 168-88 (note: They've only gone 6-4 in the playoffs).

Anyway, Accuscore has it incredibly close, with GB winning 50% of the time to 49% for Pittsburgh, with GB outscoring Pittsburgh by an average score of less than 1 pt per game (22.6 pts vs 22.0 pts).
