Championship: Sam Shields

Sorry for taking so long and I'm sure some of you even forgot the game. I'm gonna keep it short and sweet.

When you have a secondary this strong, I guess you have to try and go after the weakest link, even if he may not be that weak. The Bears tried it. When they wanted to push the ball down the field they looked either to Hester or in the direction of Sam Shields. He was fooled once on a late developing route, but that's about it. Aside from that, he played the perfect ball game. I was oozing with excitement about his first pick. For a rookie to play that ball, that calmly, with such impeccable technique is astounding. Shields got a good punch at the line, forced the receiver to take the outside release, threw that left arm subtly in front of the receiver to slightly slow him down, recognized the ball was in the air based on the route and receivers reactions, located the ball, and made a terrific athletic play while high-pointing it. Outstanding. On the game-clincher, he understood he had safety help over the top so took the inside release and sagged under the receiver and capitalized on the poor decision and poor throw by Hanie.

Woodson did his job today taking care of Bennett and Olsen out of the slot. Tramon did a nice job taking care of his assignments as well. The big play to Knox was a combination of him and Collins. All of the YAC was definitely on Nick, but I don't separate the two something I'll try to do next year. Tramon played the underneath shade, expecting Collins' help over the top. He should have still played tighter coverage, but Nick should have made the tackle immediately rather than jumping on the inside fake by Knox, which Tramon would have had covered anyway. The Earl Bennett TD was marked against Collins. Although Woodson could have had better coverage, Nick should have been at the ball, which would have made it a bang bang play. I think he was expecting an overthrow and when Bennett went up to come down with it, Collins was off balance and out of position to make the tackle. Poor performance by Collins today. We can't have those mistakes against Knox, though the 9 route hasn't really been much of a problem for us this year.

Hawk's numbers look bad, but it's not nearly that poor. On the first pass play of the game, he slipped after realizing Forte was not staying into block as it initially appeared. It was a short dump-off with a lot of YAC. His other 2 completions were on crossing routes. On one, the defense looked entirely confused and out of position.

As for the BJ Raji play...he's one athletic and massive man. Here's the NFL Network's nice breakdown of it.

Regardless of the outcome of our next game, this series has come to a close for the 2010-2011 season. I'll have the usual up after Super Bowl followed by a separate year-in-review. full article.

Yes, the QB rating is wrong.

Other than that, good stuff. Thank you Sam Shields. No argument there that he was the guy who deserves it.

If there's a lesson to be learned, it's that my Excel skills and error checking ability turns to shit at 5AM after in my 22nd consecutive hour awake, but my dedication to the Packers never falters.

It just required a quick fix.

Yeah, it was a bad game for Collins, but other than that, an impressive effort by the secondary. The coaches must be good at keeping Peprah safe. He doesn't seem to get targeted a lot, even though he is the weakest player in our secondary (of the top five, anyway).

It sounds like Collins was overaggressive on those two big plays. Hopefully he will tone it down a bit for the next game, although we wouldn't want him to completely lose his aggressiveness. He probably just underestimated that backup QB.
