According to the rules, the penalty was 100% correct. But this was a textbook tackle. It is anatomically impossible to tackle with your shoulder, and not have your head actually lead. There is a reason for the saying "has a good head on his shoulders". Peppers was aiming to place his head behind Rodgers non-throwing shoulder. The process of the throw turned Rodgers body and lowered that non-throwing shoulder which is why there ended up helmet to helmet.

Just one of those things. Good flag, bad fine.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

I disagree. I was taught to hit below the shoulders. Not above them. Peppers is too high.

I was taught to aim for the solar plexus, plant my face mask, wrap up and drive through.

Peppers had his chin down, and hit above the shoulder. Wrong and wrong. Then Briggs reached over Peppers to slap Rodgers in the facemask. Peppers head should be about the level his arms are. His arms should be closer to Rodgers waist.

A text book tackle is the one Zombo got flagged on in the first Bear game. He planted his facemask in Cutlers chest wrapped up and drove through. Cutlers chins came down and hit Zombo's helmet. That was a bad penalty and a bad fine. Totally wrong message to send.
I want to go out like my Grandpa did. Peacefully in his sleep.
Not screaming in terror like his passengers.

I guess the NFL s saying that it has seen enough of the Stingley Tatum plays to last a lifetime. This was a preseason game if I recall. Pay is not the issue. Would Daryl and his family given $100,000,000 for him to walk again? I think so.

Stingley was hit by Raiders Jack Tatum. As Stingley and Tatum collided, Stingley lowered his helmet, which collided with Tatum's shoulder pad. (NOTE: SHOULDER PAD.)

If you want to blame anyone for Stingley's paralysis blame Steve Grogan for leaving him hanging out there in no man's land by over throwing Stingley on the pass.

Only in a still frame might it seem as though that tackle was properly executed. If you watch the replay in slow motion, it was deliberate and aimed, and while Rodgers was indeed in the process of throwing, he did not tuck his head into the tackle. He was fully upright. You can even see that in the picture above -- if anything, his momentum is backwards at the moment of impact. Peppers knew exactly what he was doing. It seems the NFL is trying to avoid too much scrutiny in the lead-up to the big game. The last thing they want is to risk Matt Flynn starting in the Super Bowl. At the very least, they don't want to overshadow the feel-good story that is the sixth seed making the big game with controversy over a dirty hit.

I'm not going to watch the video because I know what happens.

For the record, Stingley is DEAD. He died from complications of being a quadriplegic from that hit.

I'd rather not see these brutal hits. I know too many people with football injuries, myself included. And I didn't even make college level football.

My car insurance agent (friend of the family) played FB in college. Tough as nails and was fun to play sandlot football with. He's got a cane now. Earl Campbell, a favorite of my family, is in a wheelchair. Wallie Payton's dead.

I'd much rather see clean tackling than brutal hits. Or better yet, I'd want to see strips, like Woody does.

Strips are fun to watch, but more often than not defensive players give up precious yards going for the strip instead of stopping the ballcarrier in his tracks with a good clean tackle. I'l take solid, consistent tackling over flashy turnovers any day.

I'd rather see good form tackling with wrapping up and bringing down than a big hit.

If the NFL was serious about eliminating these types of hits they could, but they choose to say they want to eliminate em but don't take the appropriate steps to do it.

Two easy ways I could think of are

1) Make the minimum fine 100K
2) Take the soccer card system or the NBA technical foul system

First offense in a game = penalty, fine, the whole team gets a warning
Second offense in a game = penalty, that player get ejected from the game and sits out the next game (without pay).

That would fix the situation really quick. Also, they need to address helmet hits on other players other than QBs and WRs.

I've considered the idea that the yellow-card/red-card system could be useful for the NFL too. But can you imagine what a hilarious storm of protest would arise from the fans were such a system implemented? All the rednecks with their chaws of 'baccy and their spittoons would be growling 'bout how the "NFL makes the game more like them pussy Europeans every year." But I think it could be effective.

I agree that if the NFL is actually serious about preventing the head injuries, they need to look at these hits for other positions too, not just with QBs.

Zero2Cool (9h) : Mystery candidate in the Cowboys head coaching search believed to be Packers ST Coordinator Rich Bisaccia.
beast (23h) : Also why do both NYC teams have absolutely horrible OL for over a decade?
beast (23h) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job

Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you

dfosterf (22-Jan) : Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.

dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.

Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Oh snap!!!
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Even Stevie Wonder can see that.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Nah, you see Lions OC leaving to be HC of Bears is directly related to Packers.
