Seems light to me. If they really want to cut down on this, they need to start making the fines start around 50K.

I'm not a big NBA fan, but from watching some games this year, they really have cut down on the shit talking to the officials with their fines. (I can't believe I'm saying this) The NFL could learn something from the NBA in this case.

Julius Peppers fined $10,000 for hit on Aaron Rodgers

Green Bay Packers v Pittsburgh Steelers

Bears defensive end Julius Peppers drew a 15-yard penalty for delivering a brutal shot to Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the NFC Championship Game. Now hes drawn a fine as well.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Peppers was fined $10,000 for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Rodgers.

Peppers, several Bears players and thousands of fans at Soldier Field expressed their displeasure when the flag was thrown, but it was clearly the right call.

Frankly, Peppers is lucky the fine wasnt more: He put the crown of his helmet directly into Rodgers jaw. After a season in which the NFL made cracking down on shots to the head of defenseless players a top priority, a $10,000 fine for that kind of hit seems fairly light.

So Nick Collins gets fined 50k for barely hitting Roy Williams, but Peppers only gets fined 10k for nearly decapitating Rodgers. That seems about right.

And the game. There are a lot of players that would pay $100,000 in fines if they could knock out the opposing qb in the championship game and get their team into the SB.
The bigger the game the bigger the fine. I wish the league also handed down suspension along with the fines.
Regular season first offense 1 game. first two rounds of the playoffs, first offense 4 games
Championship game 6 games
SB 8 games.

raise the fine and the suspension for subsequent offenses.

First off, I hate any rules that protect any one player more than any other. I understand the idea, but I think it's bad for the game. The idea that you can't punch a QB in the head is a good one, but enforcing that rule objectively means that accidentally touching a QB's head must also be forbidden. It's ridiculous that we fine defenders for helmet-to-helmet hits and facemasks while we routinely allow ballcarriers to lead with their heads and use stiff-arms.
[/rant]

Anyway, in our current pansy-ass system, that fine is low. Way too low. James Harrison should ask for some of his money back.

And it sends a bad message: "Hey kids! For the low, low price of $10K and 15 yards you can knock your opponent's QB out of the game!"

Shit, teams will probably start giving the hitters $20K bonuses for that.

You think any Pittsburgh Steeler is going to see a $10K fine as a deterrent next Sunday?

{Edit to add that I love wpr's idea that suspensions should be handed out as well...}

ya that about sums it up ... peppers is huge compared to rodgers and that hit was meant to hurt. It would be like me running full steam at a girl and taking her down; ya sure she could get up but how many times could someone take hits like that before ya they are out.

Its common sense - tackles; good pure tackles then fine take the QB down. Looking to hurt then assess a big ass fine and perhaps game time; see how teams like that to their players ... and believe me if peppers was say out his next 4 games for that hit (including next year) - he might consider where he is hitting his next QB.

I'm shocked at how light this fine is.
Considering what the NFL says their stance is on these type of hits, it almost seems like they really wanted to overlook this one.

Roy Williams even said the league shouldn't fine Collins if I recall correctly. Collins barely made head contact and did so because Williams was falling. It is so easy to mistime that and get a piece of someone else's helmet. What is Peppers' excuse though. Rodgers was a non-moving target and he had all the time in the world to lower his pad level and hit Rodgers in the chest with a clean tackle.
