Of all the heroes in the Green Bay Packers' big win Sunday, perhaps none was bigger for patrons of Simonet's Bar than an electrician known as "Sparky."

That is because an electrical power outage struck the east-side tavern just as a capacity crowd was getting ready to watch the NFC championship game on TV.

In fact, the outage at about 2 p.m. Sunday left 700 businesses and residences in the dark during the first half of the Green Bay-Chicago game.

Wisconsin Public Service spokesman Kerry Spees said the outage was caused by an equipment failure that could not have been anticipated or prevented.

When the TVs and lights all went dark at Simonet's, 925 Main St., electrician Bob "Sparky" Gartzke did not hesitate. Gartzke, who was at the tavern to watch the game himself, dashed out the door and returned a short time later with a generator. The TVs were back up and running by the second quarter, to the delight of bar patrons.

"They were all cheering, like we just made a touchdown," Gartzke said. "That made me feel pretty good."

Spees said Wisconsin Public Service had power restored to all customers by about 3 p.m.

Will trade electricity for beer! I'm sure everyone loved Sparky and bought him drinks.
