EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Officials in the New York-New Jersey area need to issue a public health warning to avoid a widespread outbreak of Favre fever. Symptoms include a tendency to give too much credit to Brett Favre for the Jets' 6-3 start, occasional blindness when Favre throws it straight into a defender's hands, and the delusional belief the Jets can make a deep playoff run this year.

New York's 47-3 win over the Rams, the biggest in franchise history, creates optimal conditions for Favre fever. Like most of their wins, Favre had little to do with the lopsided victory. Favre was fine, completing 14 of 19 passes for 167 yards and one TD, but any Jets quarterback, from Pat Ryan to Glenn Foley could have brought that win home. The Rams couldn't tackle, hold on to the ball, line up onsides or do anything a professional team should be able to do.

Even in the easy win, Favre threw two passes that should have been picks. Luckily for Favre, no Ram on either side of the ball can catch. There's a reason Favre leads the NFL with 12 interceptions and his sloppiness will catch up to him late in the season.

As the Jets enter the national spotlight this week before they face the Patriots on Thursday night, everyone will focus way too much on Favre, and too little on what has really changed in the Meadowlands this year. While the Jets were 1-8 at this point last year, the major difference isn't Favre. Here are the three biggest reasons for the turnaround:

-- The new Sack Exchange: Head coach Eric Mangini and defensive coordinator Bob Sutton have done a great job of creatively rushing the passer out of their 3-4 sets. On several plays, Rams quarterback Marc Bulger had no idea where the pressure would come from. Safety Abram Elam and cornerback Darrelle Revis both have stripped the ball from the quarterback on blitzes the last two weeks. And with the Patriots inability to burn anyone downfield, New York will have a lot of freedom to bring pass-rushers from all over the defense.

-- Thomas the Train: Jets running back Thomas Jones is playing like he was supposed to last season. Jones burned the Rams for 131 yards and three touchdowns and ranks in the top 10 in the NFL with both 750 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns. Give Favre some credit for this, since defense have to give him more respect downfield than Chad Pennington or Kellen Clemens did last year. But the bigger factor is the revamped offensive line and Jones himself running with more confidence. Jones has improved dramatically after the defense first makes contact, and his tough running has fired up the whole offense.

-- A schedule softer than the U.S. economy: Hard to believe the Rams aren't the worst team the Jets have played all season. They've played two one-win teams (Cincinnati and Kansas City), two two-win teams (St. Louis and Oakland). And playing Arizona on the East Coast at 1 p.m. is always an easy win.

Favre has been the NFL's biggest attention magnet for some time and he's an easy storyline coming into the showdown against New England. But if you hear someone talking about No. 4 as a savior in the coming week, don't get too close. Favre fever can strike anywhere. It might seem harmless, but multiple interceptions and an overdose of hype can develop quickly.

Most of that's true but I disagree about the fact the Jets can't make a deep playoff run cause they seem to be looking better each game. My feeling is if the Jets can be this good with an average Favre they could be a SB contender if he would regain last years form

I think they're a lock to make the playoffs if they use Jones like they did last game.

Zero2Cool (1h) : NFL thought it would get more attention week preceding Super Bowl.
Zero2Cool (1h) : Yes, the Pro Bowl. It was played Sunday before Super Bowl from 2010-2022
packerfanoutwest (1h) : pro bowl
Zero2Cool (1h) : From 2010 to 2022, it was played on the Sunday before the Super Bowl
Zero2Cool (1h) : They moved it to the BYE week before Super Bowl several years ago.
packerfanoutwest (1h) : it was always after the SB.....
beast (10h) : Though I stop following pro bowl years ago
beast (10h) : I thought the pro game was before the Super Bowl?
packerfanoutwest (11h) : ok now for the Pro Bowl Game in Hawaii
TheKanataThrilla (12h) : If I was Philly I would try to end it instead of punting it
Mucky Tundra (12h) : VICTORY! We have (moral) victory!
TheKanataThrilla (12h) : Hey they mentioned that we 3-peted
Mucky Tundra (13h) : seems to me the 49ers should have traded Aiyuk when they had the chance
Mucky Tundra (13h) : if the Eagles get it down to the 1, do they Tush Push or give it to Barkley?
TheKanataThrilla (13h) : 49ers have a money problem if they want to sign their QB
Mucky Tundra (13h) : Wait for real? Didn't he just get an extension two years ago?
Zero2Cool (13h) : 49ers gonna trade Deebo. Interesting
TheKanataThrilla (13h) : Replays always never seem to show the holdings
TheKanataThrilla (13h) : Great throw by Hurts
Mucky Tundra (13h) : Where Carter falls prey to bad off the field influences (to be clear, not saying he'd clip someone though)
Mucky Tundra (13h) : Had Carter not gone to Philly were they already had a lot of old college friends, he ends up in a similar spot to Aaron Hernandez
Mucky Tundra (13h) : I think some of his coaches told scouts to stay away
Mucky Tundra (13h) : the street racing incident+conditioning and motivation problems
beast (13h) : Then Carter was street racing, where the other car crashed and people died... and other teams were scared to pick Carter for some reason
beast (13h) : I think the Saints traded up, giving their next year 1st to the Eagles, and then they sucked and Eagles got the 10th overall pick
packerfanoutwest (13h) : wtf Barkley?
TheKanataThrilla (13h) : Getting Carter and Nolan Smith in the first round in 2023 was pretty darn good
Mucky Tundra (13h) : for some reason i'm thinking of a draft where the Eagles where in the mid 20s and a top player fell all the way to them
TheKanataThrilla (13h) : I think so. I would need to look it up. Think it may have been Carolina's pick.
Mucky Tundra (13h) : i'm not sure who i'm thinking of now
Mucky Tundra (13h) : oh fuck me i messed that up
Zero2Cool (13h) : Jordan Davis was 13th overall
Zero2Cool (13h) : Carter was 9th overall
Zero2Cool (13h) : Eagles had 15th and 10th selections, moved to 13 and 9 to get Davis and Carter back to back
Zero2Cool (13h) : Eagles traded up for Carter, didn't they?
Mucky Tundra (13h) : Obviously he was a huge risk but getting a top 5 talent on the dline in the mid 20s is fortuitous
Mucky Tundra (14h) : Jalen Carter falling into their lap certainly helps
TheKanataThrilla (14h) : And we could only wish to have this type of D
TheKanataThrilla (14h) : It's not like Philly has had low draft picks, but has managed to get themselves a top notch pass rush. We spend so much draft capital of D
packerfanoutwest (14h) : another crap halftime show
TheKanataThrilla (14h) : I think it is over, but then I think of Atlanta and want Philly to go in with the same intensity in the second half
Mucky Tundra (14h) : And with a Pass Rush that might as well be on a milk cartoon and no Jaire
Martha Careful (14h) : I cant help but feel good about how well the Packers D played in Philly during the playoffs
Mucky Tundra (14h) : this game is over
Mucky Tundra (14h) : This might be the kill shot here
Mucky Tundra (14h) : oh that's such a bad penalty for KC after getting the 3rd down stop
TheKanataThrilla (14h) : Philly DL has come to play
TheKanataThrilla (14h) : Ceoper DeJean with the INT scored...bad memories of draft night
Mucky Tundra (14h) : ok scratch that
Mucky Tundra (14h) : Game feels like last years Super Bowl: 49ers started off in control, moved the ball well but didn't have much of a lead to show for it
