The Philadelphia Eagles have fired defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, according to a team source.

The Eagles do not have a replacement in mind right now and will sort through several potential candidates, according to the source.

McDermott's 21st-ranked unit had particular problems in the red zone. He was promoted to coordinator before the start of the 2009 season when legendary coordinator Jim Johnson was no longer healthy enough to coach.

It is a rarity for head coach Andy Reid to fire a coach or make major staff changes such as this except when losing coaches to other organizations.

McDermott joined the Eagles in 1998. In 12 seasons in Philadelphia he rose from a defensive assistant to ultimately run the Eagles defense the last two years. Along the way, McDermott coached the Eagles' secondary and linebackers.

The Eagles defense allowed an average of 216.8 passing yards and 110.4 passing yards per game this past season.

Seems pretty premature to me. McDermott was a Jim Johnson disciple and a guy that many -- including myself -- wanted to take over Green Bay's DC job (before Capers name entered the mix).

I can say this much, someone is going to get a quality coordinator in the offseason.
William Henderson didn't have to run people over. His preferred method was levitation.

Seems pretty premature to me. McDermott was a Jim Johnson disciple and a guy that many -- including myself -- wanted to take over Green Bay's DC job (before Capers name entered the mix).

I can say this much, someone is going to get a quality coordinator in the offseason.

Back on topic, I don't want to see someone like McDermott end up in a place like Minny. I'm not sure if Frazier is going to call plays for the defense, and I know fundamentally it's a Cover 2 scheme. But given the Queens' recent struggles maybe they mix things up. Meh. Why am I even thinking about the Eagles fired DC. TONIGHT IS ABOUT GREEN BAY! WOOT!
