The irony is that if the officials had not blown that call against Detroit where Johnson clearly made the catch, the Bears would be out of the playoffs at 8th.

BIL has got big brass ones complaining about officiating after getting handed a game by a hack call like that.

Well, the could also become despondent and eat their right guard deodorant sticks in a mass suicide attempt.

But seriously folks,

I think if Cutler presses, he gets worse. If they started trying harder in the early part of the season when the line was so horrible, Cutler makes worse decisions.

From the way Tony Dungee explained it, that was a misinterpretation of the rule. The "going to the ground" was assuming that possession was not established by the normal rules first. If it would have been a possession before he hit the ground, the play should be over and ruled a TD. Possession was when he got both feet down and demonstrated control. If you go to the ground after you establish possession and are in bounds, it is a catch. The "process of a catch" ends when you establish possession. If you don't have it established before you hit the ground, then you have to maintain control of the ball.

The rule was for if you dove for a ball and didn't get your feet down. According to Dungee.

The rule is a good one, the interpretation was flawed.

Dex, Mike Pereira, the former vice president of officiating for the NFL, said that the interpretation was correct although he would not have made the call. That is why it is a lousy rule. If 2 men who know the NFL rules can look at the same play and come to totally different conclusions, it is a bad rule.
This past week I was listening to the radio. I am not sure which station. It may have been the SCORE out of Chicago. They were talking about that play. It was mentioned that the NFL made this rule a point of emphasis for the year. And since it was the first game of the season the ref followed the rule. If it had happened in week 15 he would have fell back to the old line of personal interpretation.
That is one of the things I hate about NFL rules. They arbitrarily make rules a point of emphasis and then you get a lot of penalties called in the first half of the season and then it tapers off later in the same season and the next year everything is the way it was 2 seasons before. If it is a penalty call it. If not don't. They shouldn't bounce back and forth sometimes it is and sometimes it is not. No one knows for sure what the ref is going to do. Every crew enforces the rules to a different degree.

You got that right Cheesey. I would love to go into Soldier Field and pound them into the ground but NO is going to do it before we can get there.
There are two teams that are lucky to be in the play offs. Chicago and Seattle.

Off topic- if the NFL wants to keep the sanctity of the divisions fine. Let Seattle in but they should be the 6 seed not the 4. NO will get to play both of the "luck" teams. It just doesn't make sense.

There were missed calls on both sides of the ball. I looked at that Peppers/Rodgers call as a make up call for ALL the times Rodgers has been hit helmet-to-helmet or roughed up after a play and never got a single friggin' call.

The first holding call on Bulaga was pure trash.

beast (23-Jan) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job

dfosterf (22-Jan) : Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.

Martha Careful (22-Jan) : just kidding...it was down
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
