Nearly four years after leaving the Steelers and joining the CBS studio team, Bill Cowher has made it clear that hes ready to return. Maybe.

But he isnt making his interest known by, for example, pretending to be interested in a college job. Cowher is instead doing it the old-fashioned way.

Hes saying so.

Im open to listen to opportunities, Cowher said in an online chat at USAToday.com, via Michael Hiestand of USA Today. Im very comfortable at CBS. Ill keep all my options open. And Ill only answer those questions at the end of the season. Im not going to comment on any hypothetical situations until the entire season is over.

The best fit for Cowher, in our view, remains the Giants. After a slow start, however, the Giants have propelled themselves into playoff contention. If they make it, the job likely wont be open. If they dont make it, coach Tom Coughlin could be out especially since hes 64 and entering the final year of his contract.

Panthers fans remain very interested in Cowher making the move from Raleigh to Charlotte. But owner Jerry Richardson likely is unwilling to give Cowher the kind of money and power hed want.

Also working against Cowher in 2011 is the potential for a lockout that would wipe out much of the offseason practice schedule. Any team that brings in a new coach could end up with less time to make a proper transition.

Then again, if anyone can make it happen with limited time, its Cowher.

Thoughts on where he may go? I'm thinking the New York Football Giants sounds plausible, also on the table are the 49ers (IMO), the Broncos, the Panthers, maybe the Titans (lost their last 6 games, and if Vince Young stays, I think Jeff Fisher leaves).....Any ones that I am obviously missing?

It will be Carolina or Chicago.

The Bears will only let go of Lovie Smith if they suffer a collapse down the stretch. Cowher will no doubt take that job. He's high on Jay Cutler and I have never heard him say much negative about Chicago.

Carolina is the frontrunner. He lives in North Carolina. I think they want him badly too.

I think San Francisco gets back to hiring a west coast offensive coach, so I consider them a long shot.

Denver wants a GM in place and then the head coach. That rules out Cowher, who wants full control.

He may get the Giants if they don't make the playoffs. The football Nazi is in his last year of his contract.

Coughlin is the kind of coach who wears out his welcome with the players after awhile, so the Giants are a good guess. And I agree that Carolina is the most likely.

I don't think the potential lockout factors into this very much. I would not expect a team to hang onto a coach they don't want just because there may be a lockout. They will hire whoever they think is best regardless of circumstances and that guy will just have to figure it out.

Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : sounds like Packers don't get good compensation, Jaire staying
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Nobody coming up with a keep, but at x amount
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (16-Apr) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (16-Apr) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (16-Apr) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
