Of course, it's equally possible that after such a massive overhaul of the line, we could end up with a line that not only can't run block, but also can't pas block either. That's a really scary prospect.

Not really, if the entire defense is in the backfield after 2 seconds it'll make for really easy screens. 🙂

God do I miss the line we had back in like '03-'04 with Cliffy and Tausch in their prime, Rivera, Whale, and Flanagan

Should be an interesting game with the Niners to consider offensive line strategies. Their offensive line consists of 3 first round picks (Staley, Davis, Iupati) and two second round picks (Rachal, Baas).

Their Line:
LT: Staley (1st round)
LG: Iupati (1st round)
C: Baas (high 2nd round)
RG: Rachal (high 2nd round)
RT: Davis (1st round)

Our Line:
LT: Clifton (2nd round)
LG: Colledge (2nd round)
C: Wells (7th round)
RG: Sitton (4th round)
RT: Bulaga (1st round)

I know this doesn't entirely reflect on Ted's drafting philosophy, considering Wells and Clifton were Packers before he got here. I just thought it would be an interesting thing to look out for.

I always thought lang was pretty decent; wonder where hes been at. Hope we can get him in the lineup again; although I got to say our line has been pretty good lately at protecting rodgers (although I think he has gotten better at getting rid of the ball also (as seen by that shovel pass last weekend to jackson?)

I don't know why we can't bring in a jumbo package when we need to.

We have the makings of it.

I think the D's are cheating the gaps on our right side-- I know I would.

It might even include taking Cliffy out, all 320 of his old assed-bad-kneed self.

This line as constituted has consistently proved it can't get a real push when it's hat-on-a-hat.

I KNOW Colledge would come out, I'm pretty damn sure Cliffy should come out, and I PERSONALLY think Wells should come out in that situation, but honestly cannot say for sure--- I'd really have to TRY our 3rd string center in those 3rd and shorts--- He's a BIG BOY...

We all see it, (at least those of us are that are reasonably sane--joke--)why can't Campen?

Because, well, y'know, it's somehow vitally important to have continuity on the offensive line for an entire game. Swapping guys out on the o-line is some how more detrimental than swapping guys out on the d-line. I've never understood that one.

I think part of being an offensive linemen is your own timing, you timing with your teammate next to you, and of course trusting the guy next to you, which is why it is vitally more important to have continuity on the offensive line.

Thats really all I can come up with. For the two years I played line (obviously at a lower level) one thing I thrived off of was trusting the player next to me.

I can't speak for the defensive side of the ball.

The o-line went to hell when we started this zone-blocking shit. I hated the idea then - and I'm hating the results now. Back in 2003/2004 we had road graders out there and it paid off big in both the run game and the passing game. The line just hasn't been as effective ever since. The fact that we lost both Wahle and Rivera at the same time didn't help, either...

{Edit to try to add something constructive...}

What to do about it now? I'm not sure. We can't just blow up the line and start fresh - that's a recipe for disaster and we're too good in other areas to rebuild like that. The importance of continuity - especially in run blocking - cannot be understated.

I would have JUST LIKE TO HAVE SEEN how our line played with Colledge out and Lang in his place, as one example.

At this point in the season I understand I am howling at the moon (again)-

And after investing all that in the Oline they have given up five more sacks and their offense ranks second to last in points scored. I know they have QB issues but even in the run game they average 12 more yards a game than us. You would think with a Frank Gore in the backfield and that Oline they could do better than 17th in rushing.

Maybe they have all these issues and are 4-7 because they invested top heavy in the Oline and haven't got players in other positions to compete?
