Packers considered hand-held device for Lambeau fans

Professional and college sports teams are constantly on the lookout for ways to enhance the fan experience. New scoreboards and better mobile sites are just a few examples. [img_r]http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/2010-09-27fanvisionp-2.jpg[/img_r]

In Miami, Stephen Ross, the owner of the Miami Dolphins, has been waving the flag for his gadget: FanVision , a handheld device fans in the stands can use to provide instant replay video and up to the minute statistics.

Ross wants every team to have them. He also wants every fan in the Super Bowl one day to have one. So far, he has signed up a dozen or so teams in the NFL to offer the device to fans.

The Green Bay Packers considered offering the device to fans this season, but there were some logistical challenges, including the issue of how the signal gets transmitted inside Lambeau Field, said team spokesman Aaron Popkey.

"We determined it was not possible for this year," he said.

The Packers will re-evaluate the system in the future, he said.

At the same time, the Packers are reviewing all sorts of other fan enhancements. Already the team's mobile website has some new features that fans can tap into while sitting in the stadium.

"We've added more links to our mobile website," Popkey said.

In a bigger way, the Packers also are studying ways to expand Lambeau Field, which would also include a larger scoreboard on the south side of the stadium.

I've seen that gadget in action, it's pretty slick.

Great. Yet one more way for people to be off in their own little digital universe instead of connecting with the people next to them.

Might as well stay home and watch it on TV.
Hard to drink, clap etc with one of those in your paws.

Honestly.. I went to the Viking game this season at Lambeau.. and the atmosphere was electric.. but just for watching the game itself.. I would rather stay home and have a couple people over..

This gadget would not sway that opinion.. cleaning up some of the nonsense in the stands and making it a bit more affordable (value verses putting up with the knuckleheads) overall might.. but for the two of us, parking, a single drink and snack.. it was easily around $500 to attend.. can't justify the difference and staying home.

Once my name comes up on the season ticket list.. I may start coming back again.. but for now.. might be once every couple years. Next trip will be to take my Son to the game.. then then the Daughter when she gets old enough.. but with some of the antics of people attending the game.. not until they I feel can handle it.

dfosterf (26-Jun) : I think it would be great to have someone like Tom Grossi or Andy Herman on the Board of Directors so he/they could inform us
dfosterf (26-Jun) : Fair enough, WPR. Thing is, I have been a long time advocate to at least have some inkling of the dynamics within the board.
wpr (26-Jun) : 1st world owners/stockholders problems dfosterf.
Martha Careful (25-Jun) : I would have otherwise admirably served
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Also, no more provision for a write-in candidate, so Martha is off the table at least for this year
dfosterf (25-Jun) : You do have to interpret the boring fine print, but all stockholders all see he is on the ballot
dfosterf (25-Jun) : It also says he is subject to another ballot in 2028. I recall nothing of this nature with Murphy
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Ed Policy is on my ballot subject to me penciling him in as a no.
dfosterf (25-Jun) : I thought it used to be we voted for the whatever they called the 45, and then they voted for the seven, and then they voted for Mark Murphy
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Because I was too lazy to change my address, I haven't voted fot years until this year
dfosterf (25-Jun) : of the folks that run this team. I do not recall Mark Murphy being subject to our vote.
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Ed Policy yay or nay is on the pre-approved ballot that we always approve because we are uninformed and lazy, along with all the rest
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Weird question. Very esoteric. For stockholders. Also lengthy. Sorry. Offseason.
Zero2Cool (25-Jun) : Maybe wicked wind chill made it worse?
Mucky Tundra (25-Jun) : And then he signs with Cleveland in the offseason
Mucky Tundra (25-Jun) : @SharpFootball WR Diontae Johnson just admitted he refused to enter a game in 41° weather last year in Baltimore because he felt “ice cold”
