Favre: Simplify Vikes' offense; Frazier welcomes QB's input

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Brett Favre figures to have at least a little more freedom in the Vikings' offense, now that the head coach he sometimes clashed with over strategy and play calls has been fired.

Interim replacement Leslie Frazier, who took over this week for Brad Childress, said Wednesday that he welcomes Favre's input "wholeheartedly" and pointed to Peyton Manning's success in Indianapolis as support for a veteran quarterback-fueled game plan.

Well, here's one item high on Favre's list: Keep it simple, stupid!

To be clear: Favre wasn't questioning the intelligence of Frazier or Childress or offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell or anyone else who wears a headset or clutches a clipboard around the NFL. But Favre argued passionately and humorously Wednesday for a less-is-more approach to offensive success.

"Every playbook across this league is way too thick," Favre said. "You never practice it all. How can you become consistent if you're running a different play every week out of a different formation with a different motion with different guys?"

The Vikings have constantly had to shuffle at wide receiver, which has clearly hindered their progress. Favre, though, insinuated that Childress over-complicated the offense without directly naming him in his diatribe against what he called an over-coached sport.

"You think those guys crack that book, go through all 500 pages? Come on," Favre said. "You could hide a couple hundred dollar bills in there."

Asked if there was a point in his NFL career when he believed like he was suffering from information overload, the 41-year-old Favre praised his first head coach in Green Bay, Mike Holmgren.

"A great play-caller, a great coach, very demanding, a perfectionist, but I thought he was a forgiving and patient coach because it took a while for us to kind of get on the same page," Favre said. "More me getting on the page with him. But I can just remember him saying over and over again, 'I don't care if they know what we run. They've still got to stop it.'

"And if you've run the same plays over and over, then you can disguise it a little bit maybe with a formation or a motion or putting a different guy in there to do that. But it's still the same play. The concept's still the same, and that has always stuck with me."

Favre said he sent Childress a text message after the firing, but he said he hadn't heard back yet.

Frazier, who was an assistant with the Colts when Manning led them to a Super Bowl title four years ago, stopped short of handing Favre a blank check to draw up plays in the dirt.

"He's a Hall of Fame quarterback. He's seen just about every defensive front and coverage that you can see, so his input will be invaluable," Frazier said. "But at the same time, there are going to be some ideas and some thoughts that may not necessarily be a part of what we do, and he'll understand that."

On Frazier's first day in charge of practice, he predicted some tweaks to the offense for this weekend's game at Washington, without being specific.

"Hopefully we'll see that on Sunday," Frazier said. "We'll all get to see the direction I'd like to see us go."

The Redskins' Donovan McNabb, on a conference call with Minnesota reporters, offered his own argument for quarterback input.

"That's how you grow together in any system," McNabb said.

The Vikings aren't about to change the West Coast system that Childress brought from Philadelphia. Bevell is a disciple of that scheme, too, so any of the adjustments made over the final six games are likely to be subtle.

"I can't envision that much changing," Vikings wide receiver Greg Camarillo said. "Both coordinators are the same, and all the personnel is the same."

Frazier said linebackers coach Fred Pagac will call the defense, with input from defensive line coach Karl Dunbar and defensive backs coach Joe Woods, while he focuses on the supervisory duties that come with being the head coach.

"I do feel comfortable with doing it, and I'll do some things in the days to come to prepare and be a little bit sharper than I'll need to be," Frazier said. "But there's nothing like game experience, so I'll get some of that on Sunday."

As for Favre's commitment to finishing the season, well, he scoffed at any speculation that he might quit early.

"How could you in my position not want to go out and play well? I have just a ton of pride," Favre said.

Without mentioning the foot, ankle and shoulder injuries listed on this week's injury report, Favre said he was fighting an illness.

"That's what happens when you get older," Favre said.

Favre sent him a text message. Blah. I wouldn't have responded either.

beast (21-Dec) : So far the college playoffs have sucked... One team absolutely dominates the other
beast (21-Dec) : Well even if you weren't positive towards a guy, you wouldn't nessarily want to tell the media that (if they don't know about it)
Martha Careful (21-Dec) : I think MLF want Love to look past the end half issues, and feel good about his play. Our coaches generally keep a very positive tone.
beast (21-Dec) : I think a great running game will do that for most QBs
packerfanoutwest (21-Dec) : Coach Matt LaFleur has said quarterback Jordan Love is playing the best football of his career.
beast (21-Dec) : Oh, that's how you keep beating buckeye, with cheating
Zero2Cool (20-Dec) : There is a rule that if your name starts with 'b' you lose 15 points. Hey, I don't make the rules, I just enforce them!
wpr (20-Dec) : and then there is Beast. Running away with it all.
beast (20-Dec) : As of tonight, 3 way tie for 2nd in Pick'em, that battle is interesting!
beast (20-Dec) : Lions vs Vikings could be the main last game as it could determine division winners or #1 vs #2 seed
Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : Or if KC needs to win for the #1 seed
Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : Right now it looks like the only prime worthy games are Det-Minny and KC-Denver (if Denver can clinch a wild card spot)
Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : The entirety of week 18 being listed as flex is weird
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : Matt LaFleur today says unequivocally "Ted Thompson had nothing to do with the drafting of Jordan Love."
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : Apparently, the editing is what pieces comments together. That Ted thing ... fake news.
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : LaFleur "opportunity that Ted Thompson thought was too good to pass up"
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : Jordan Love pick was Ted Thompson's idea.
Mucky Tundra (19-Dec) : Kyle Shanahan on signing De'Vondre Campbell as a FA last offseason: “We obviously made a mistake.”
packerfanoutwest (19-Dec) : Alexander’s last season with GB
Martha Careful (18-Dec) : if I were a professional athlete, I would probably look to see who the agent is for Kirk Cousins and then use him
beast (18-Dec) : $100 million fully guaranteed Kirk Cousins gets benched for rookie
Mucky Tundra (18-Dec) : a lower case b
Mucky Tundra (18-Dec) : The real lie is how beast capitalized his name in his message while it's normally spelled with
packerfanoutwest (18-Dec) : haha that's a lie
beast (17-Dec) : Despite what lies other might tell, Beast didn't hate the Winter Warnings, it felt refreshing to Beast for some reason.
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : whiteout uniforms in general are pretty lame and weak. NFL greed at it's worst
Martha Careful (17-Dec) : The Viking uniforms, the whiteout uniforms specifically absolutely suck
beast (17-Dec) : Thanks Zero2Cool, looks a lot better now
beast (17-Dec) : Seems like someone has a crush on me, can't stop talking about me
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : Should be gooder now. The forum default theme went to goofy land.
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : What the hell
packerfanoutwest (17-Dec) : yeah beast hates the Winter Warning Unies
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Okay I'm glad to know it's not just something happening to me lol
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Zero, did you copy the Packers uniforms from last night and white out the board?
beast (16-Dec) : Oh crap, is the board going to the Winter Warning Uniforms too?!? It's all white on white right now!
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : WR Odell Beckham Jr is officially a free agent after clearing waivers.
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : Packers are 6th in sacks.
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : RB David Montgomery will undergo season-ending knee surgery.
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Dan Campbell on onside kick with 12 minutes left: In hindsight, wish I didn’t do that
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : They have that whole 12th man thing so ...

wpr (16-Dec) : Well done jdlax. Well done.
wpr (16-Dec) : I think more likely to be Pack fans that live in the area.
wpr (16-Dec) : Pack fans represent. I pointed it out early in the game to my wife. Announcers said Packers travel well.
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : That was crazy to hear go pack go in Seattle of all plays. That 12 man thing an all
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : jdlax, good man!
jdlax (16-Dec) : Mucky, there were too many of us there to credit any single one but for sure i was 60% responsible.
