The Packers enjoyed success on kickoff coverage against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. Mason Crosby attempted to pop up some of his kicks toward the sideline, which resulted in good hang time but sacrificed distance. The strategy neutralized the Vikings dangerous return man Percy Harvin, who averaged only 17.3 yards on four returns.

The Packers employed a similar approach in 2007 against the Bears Devin Hester, who at the time was considered the most dangerous return man in the NFL.

To me its about disrupting the rhythm and timing, said Packers special teams coach Shawn Slocum.

So why dont the Packers kick the ball short and high all the time? Crosbys kicks consistently landed at about the 20-yard line but the Vikings struggled to return it beyond the 30. Wouldnt that be an acceptable tradeoff to guard against long runbacks?

Slocum explained why the Packers cant do that.

I think what would happen is their initial drops would be shorter, so they would contact our guys, said Slocum. They would change their plan. Theyre set up for a deep ball kick, and if we kicked them all short like that they would run and jump on us sooner, block us lets say at about the 40-yard line and we wouldnt have the penetration down the field. Now that guy catches the ball , takes 4 or 5 steps and hes got it to the 40. Thats what you have to be careful with.

Slocum said any time the kickoff team tackles a returner inside the 20 its like a defensive tackle for loss.

I think its really important to tackle them inside the 30-yard line just from a statistical standpoint, and historical data says that teams score at really twice the rate when they have the ball outside the 30 as opposed to inside the 20. That range between the 20 and 30 I feel fairly comfortable when were tackling in there.

I consider the return man to be tackled around the 25 as being good coverage.

Crosby has a strong leg. When they are in the dome or with the wind at his back I wish he would kick in deep intot he endzone

The league average is always around the 28 yard line. One of my pet peeves is that stats are readily available for how many yards the returner advances the ball but not for the yard line where the ball ends up. This can be deceptive, because short kicks tend to have shorter returns. Would you rather have your kickoff go two yards into the end zone and be returned 30 yards to the 28, or a kickoff to the 20 yard line that is returned 20 yards to the 40? I'll take the former, thank you very much, but the stats make it look worse than the latter.

It was interesting to hear the explanation for why teams don't do more short kicks. If my team had a good returner, I would cheat upfield as much as possible so the returner could get the ball on a short kick, or maybe at least have him close enough to receive a lateral from the guy who catches the ball. It seems like more of this stuff should happen, but I suppose it's risky.

This looks like a good spot for Matt Bowen's article over at NFP-

NFP--Coaching session--A guide to kick off coverage

I enjoyed reading this article. It isn't often you get any "nuts and bolts" on this subject.

Excellent article, dfosterf. And it's written by a former Packer. Thanks!

Zero2Cool (20h) : Johnson didn't make it until 2020. Ring 2023. 🤷 Personally, he should have been in years prior to Hall.
Zero2Cool (20h) : HUMP DAY
beast (20h) : Guys that have a good shot at making the NFL Hall of Fame usually get into their teams pretty fast
beast (20h) : Yeah, but is Kampman and the others in the NFL Hall of Fame?
Zero2Cool (20h) : Johnson was Hall of Fame, 2020. Should haev been in Ring a year later, not three years.
Zero2Cool (20h) : I could be wrong there though

Zero2Cool (20h) : I guess I see players in Packers Hall come way later
beast (20h) : Yeah, usually teams hall of fames are a much lower bar than the NFL
Zero2Cool (20h) : is it uncommon for Hall before Ring?
Zero2Cool (21h) : S Xavier McKinney named first-team All-Pro by NFLPA
beast (22h) : I missed it, sorry, but he got into the NFL Hall of Fame years before that
Zero2Cool (22h) : Jones took his sweet ole time!
Zero2Cool (22h) : Yeah, he's in the ring of honor, just saw video and his name is up there
Zero2Cool (22h) : Didn't they have a thing in 2023 for Jimmy's ring of honor? I swear I saw it
beast (23h) : Though if they're legitimately trying to re-sign MM, then it makes sense.
beast (23h) : Jerry Jones still hasn't put Jimmy Johnson in the Ring of Honor, but he's in the NFL's Hall of Fame, Jones is petty
Mucky Tundra (8-Jan) : Unless the Cowboys are planning an extension, seems kinda petty
beast (8-Jan) : Cowboys denied Bears request
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : From what I'm reading, MM is under contract through the 14th of January; after that he's free game
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : McCarthy let go or not extended??
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Chicago Bears have asked the Dallas Cowboys permission to interview Mike McCarthy for head coaching vacancy
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : The winners page that is

Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : That might be it for the Vikings
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Oh so the refs do know what intentional grounding is
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : what the hell was that Goff?! Not much pressure and he just air mails it to Harrison
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : They really need to to get rid of the auto first down for illegal contact
Martha Careful (6-Jan) : watching the Vikings and Lions it's understandable why they swept the Packers. So much better product
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Even when GB got pressure he was throwing darts; vs no pressure on that last pass he just air mails an open guy
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : didn't have guys in his face ... pressure makes difference
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Where was this Darnold vs GB?
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : BALL DON'T LIE
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : how was that not a safety? Goff throws it at an offensive lineman
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Zero, I thought that was a given! ;)
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Zero I looked through earlier and noticed the same thing. Bonkers year. I just wonder if beast put any money on games
