As stated, it depends on who your playing. If you give a QB enough time to throw, he'll find somebody open. That's just the way it is.

However, if you can pressure with three, then you pressure with three. It depends on the situation. I believe Fritz Shurmur's philosophy was to get pressure with the front four. If they didn't work, he sent five guys at a time. If that didn't work, he tried six or seven. If that wasn't working, then he tried rushing three and playing coverage. That's just one philosophy, but a pretty good one at that.

Green Bay was able to pressure Sanchez with three and four guys against the Jets. Pretty amazing considering the Jets' offensive line is among the best in the league. However, they won't be able to do that all year long. Time will come when the Packers have to send more guys and pressure. Though Dallas' offensive line is terrible, I would assume next week will be more challenging. The Jets were clearly off this past week.

If you can generate pressure without blitzing, then playing "coverage" is always a better option. The key is to generate pressure with as few people as possible and using the blitz to keep the offense off balance and uncomfortable. I'm surprised we were able to get some decent pressure against the Jets line, which does make me feel more comfortable about where we are as a team. That Matthews sack really opened my eyes. He was left on a single team against Damien Woody while Brandon Moore and Mangold doubled Raji who was a headache in the middle all day. He even got a little chip from LG Matt Slausen who then continued on to help D'Brick with Cullen. If you can have a defensive line generating a push in this system, you don't have to get all fancy.

The other thing to note is that Dom has really changed the way he plays defense given all the injuries. He has toned down the blitz a lot and allowed our terrific secondary to play coverage. Our DL + Matthews are slowly, but surely getting some pressure. The sacks aren't coming like they did early on when he was dialing them on, but we're still playing a very effective defense, as proved by the shutout vs. NY.

Nicely put, +1. I appreciate the breakdown of the Matthews sack. Raji has been tremendous. Also, that move by Clay was so good that I bet he was setting it up the whole game, waiting for just the right time to unleash it.

+1. Excellent analysis.

Our secondary is terrific. They deserve to get a lot of credit this year. Collins and Woody are playmakers. Williams has done a terrific job replacing Harris and when Harris returns, he may end up being CB #3. Weird thought, I know but it may happen.

Also different types of blitzes is key. That way they never know who's coming and who's staying. I think great defenses need to be able to do both. Jets have some games where they Blitz a lot, other games barely at all. Sometimes it's best to try to mix things up.

The Packers have won games (or played well) this year in which they have played mostly blitzing and then just last game where they dropped into coverage. We still created moderate pressure with a 4 man rush last game and that should improve when Pickett is back.

When playing a quarterback like Sanchez, it was smart to have more guys dropping back in coverage. It confused the crap out of him and made him wait longer on his throws, allowing our simple rush to get pressure on him.

It really depends on the quarterback you are going up against. I think in terms of the Washington game, when Matthews was out of the game the Packers should have dropped more into coverage.

Going up against Favre and a not-so-good offensive line should also allow for more blitzing.

As surprising as it may sound, Harris may have to surpass Shields to get his playing time. I don't think he's guaranteed even the nickel to this point. As much as it saddens me (Harris has always been my 2nd favorite corner behind Deion), that's where we are as a team. Williams and Woodson will firmly be the 1-2 for the rest of the season unless one of them COMPLETELY falls off. Shields is a guy who has the speed to hang with the fast guys and really hasn't been targeted all that much, which tells me he must be doing a good job. Both Harris and Shields are boundary corners, so it's possible we just interchange them in the lineup based on opponents. We do play a ton of nickel, which means there will be snaps to go around if we do decide to split the time. Regardless, I'm looking forward to see the return of Harris even if it will be in a limited capacity.

We may not force sub-50% completions like the Jets do, but we're more capable of picking passes off. After each week, just listen to McCarthy's pressers. #1 on his list each and every week is the turnover ratio. That means grabbing a couple on defense and being flawless on offense. He doesn't come from the old school of 3 and outs. He's a greedy SOB who wants turnovers and a short field, which is why you'll see our guys take some gambles now and then.

Anywho, given the nature of last season and the late season games vs. Pittsburgh and Arizona, this secondary is far more talented, deep, and healthy than we were at this point a year ago. Despite the injuries we've had this year, I'm glad our secondary remains in tact because everything Mike McCarthy wants from his defense comes from turnovers generated by our guys in the back end.

More good points. You should post more often. I hadn't thought about it, but you may be right that it is not a done deal that Harris will be ahead of Shields when he comes back.

Maybe Harris will replace Pat Lee and have to work his way up from there. I thought he and Bigby would both be active for the Jets game, but they weren't, so maybe McCarthy will wait till after the bye week to try and get them back in the swing of things.

Sure shows the depth we have in the secondary right now Safety position is looking good right now too with Bigby coming back. I like the players we have at linebacker and once Pickett comes back the addition of Green will certainly help our D Line out. D wise I'm liking how things are shaping up for down the stretch even with all the injuries.

Rios - Is Bigby coming back? Just because someone is eligible to come back from PUP doesn't mean they will.

Maybe you have seen a report I didn't see. I'm asking because I don't know.

Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : I think some of his coaches told scouts to stay away
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : the street racing incident+conditioning and motivation problems
beast (10-Feb) : Then Carter was street racing, where the other car crashed and people died... and other teams were scared to pick Carter for some reason
beast (10-Feb) : I think the Saints traded up, giving their next year 1st to the Eagles, and then they sucked and Eagles got the 10th overall pick
packerfanoutwest (10-Feb) : wtf Barkley?
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : Getting Carter and Nolan Smith in the first round in 2023 was pretty darn good
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : for some reason i'm thinking of a draft where the Eagles where in the mid 20s and a top player fell all the way to them
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : I think so. I would need to look it up. Think it may have been Carolina's pick.
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : i'm not sure who i'm thinking of now
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : oh fuck me i messed that up
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Jordan Davis was 13th overall
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Carter was 9th overall
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Eagles had 15th and 10th selections, moved to 13 and 9 to get Davis and Carter back to back
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Eagles traded up for Carter, didn't they?
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : Obviously he was a huge risk but getting a top 5 talent on the dline in the mid 20s is fortuitous
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : Jalen Carter falling into their lap certainly helps
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : And we could only wish to have this type of D
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : It's not like Philly has had low draft picks, but has managed to get themselves a top notch pass rush. We spend so much draft capital of D
