Retired NFL linebacker Junior Seau was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence early Monday -- and then drove his vehicle off a cliff after his release.
Seau allegedly hit his live-in girlfriend at his home in Oceanside, Calif., around 10:13 p.m. PT on Sunday, Lt. Leonard Mata of the Oceanside Police Department said in a statement. His girlfriend sustained minor injuries, but did not require medical treatment.
"The 25-year-old victim reported that Junior Seau assaulted her during a verbal argument," Mata wrote in the statement.
Seau, 41, originally was not at his home in Oceanside, a city about 40 miles north of San Diego, when police arrived, but agreed to return home when officers spoke to him via a cell phone. He was taken into custody around 12:20 a.m. PT and charged with one felony count of domestic battery.
A San Diego Sheriff's Department spokesperson told FanHouse that Seau posted bail at Vista Detention Facility early Monday morning. Hours after his release, Seau's Cadillac SUV was found at the bottom of a cliff in nearby Carlsbad.
