Ah, that very last sentence. I've got to get some snobby clothes for the Mrs. now.

You know your stuff. I'm going to have to print this out and take it to the liquor store for some research. I have just been exposed as a noob.

Restore/customize old cars and motorcycles. Just dropped a small block Chevy and updated driveline in my 1953 Willy's station wagon, and run around in the summer in a hot rodded 1970 VW Beetle convertible.

It all started so innocently with plastic models as a kid.....

Good liquor....gee, this could be a dissertation.
I love a "whisper 'vermouth' quietly over the glass" Sapphire Martini. With 2-3 olives.

I do occasionally like a "half and half" (1/2 sapphire, 1/2 vodka, with a twist of lemon), but I don't call it a martini. Martini = gin. Period.

(But the vodka martini people don't bother me as the people who drink chocalate martinis or multicolored martinis.)

Outside of martinis, I like Plymouth Gin probably the best as gin. (But that's primarily because I went through a Travis McGee period.)

I like a good spicy bloody mary, but since I use tequila instead of vodka, it's probably got another name. (I do like the occasional tequila shooter, usually on a day that sucks and I need a quick kick in the face when I first sit at the bar.)

But mostly, when I said "good liquor" I was thinking whisky, whiskey, and brandy.

Whisky (no "e," a/k/a "scotch"): I like the lighter types. Dalwhinnie is the one most often seen here in the states. Mostly, though, I tend to buy different ones that have a "Signature": Essentially, as I understand it, lots of the smaller Scots distilleries got together in marketing their stuff. They all have the same clear bottle and labelling, usually in a yellow can labelled "signature classics" or "signature whiskys" or something like that....but each one is different. My favorite so far probably is a Mortlach.

Probably because I weaned myself on the stuff drinking it neat, when technically it is supposed to be drunk with a splash of water. I rarely water mine at all, unless its a darker whiskey.

I don't drink much blended scotch ....just because I like the singles better. Johnny Walker Black IMO among the best of my experience, though. Best I've ever had was Usquebach. (which is simply gaelic for "whisky", so if the bar you see it at lists it as a whisky, which the one where I had it did, you're drinking whisky whisky....:) )

Whiskey (bourbon, rye, other North Americans): I probably drink Jack Daniels more than anything nowadays, but I really like Templeton Rye, even if it is made here in Iowa. (It supposedly was Capone's drink of choice, but I don't know if I buy that; but I do like it.)

Brandy: No, not that rotgut that passes for brandy in Wisconsin. The snobby European kind. Cognac, Armagnac. Found a really good Portuguese brandy when I was over there.

Technically these aren't liquors, but...

Beer: I drink this a lot less than I used to. (Heck I drink a lot less of everything than I used to. Last time I bought Signature whisky in Britain was 2006. Two bottles. And one is still unopened). I like the original Leinies. I have yet to find a wheat beer I like. I like just about any Belgian or Scots ale, Fullers ESB. (I always order "yer best bitter" when in the UK). Guiness is too heavy for me, though I've had a couple Aussie stouts that I liked.

Wine: I drink it when I eat at fancy restaurants or when I'm entertaining a dinner party. Thats about it. I have no clue what's good, and what's not. I do like port, but that's an even rarer pleasure than some of the whiskys.

I just reread this. I realize that almost everything I list here is best as a "sipping drink," leisurely after a fine meal. In the old days, with a pipe or a cigar, in a leather armchair.

With an elegantly dressed lady in basic black and stiletto heels in the other armchair.

Wade - I'm buying the Mrs stiletto heels this weekend. She already has the black dress.

For gin, we just do Bombay Sapphire. I don't know anything else as I found something I liked and just stuck with it. Makes great martinis.

We went on a Scotch run with a copy of your email for reference a few weekends ago. Couldn't find Mortlach or Usquebach but did manage to find Dalwhinnie's. It was $58/bottle here so it's something I won't be making a habit of.

We normally do Johnny Walker Black which I like a lot. I was telling NSD that I pour it over ice and let it sit for at least 10 minutes to water down before even taking a sip.

Finally opened up the Dalwhinnie's this weekend and must say that Dalwhinnie's smelled magnificent. I hang around a few wine snobs (I myself am a wine noob) and so take nose seriously. I let the Dalwhinnie's sit for about 20 minutes before sipping it. Very smoky, but in a good way. I see why it's $58/bottle. Well worth it, although I'll go back to Johnny Walker Black and just drink Dalwhinnie's for special occasions. I'm not rich yet.

We may have to hit some better places to find Mortlach and Usquebach. I want to compare the four (including Johnny Walker Black) so this report is to be continued...

LOL I always wondered what in the heck the liquor store needed all those bottles for when all you need is a bunch of stacked beer cases. Now I see where the fancy bottles are going, there not just for show.

Sorry about that dhpackr, just a quick glance at your name screwed me up - it actually was in WI, though...Lake Owen up in Bayfield Co.

Have always been more of a musky/smallie guy and have never taken advantage of the browns in the lake michigan harbors, or any of the other runs, unfortunately. I have a number of buddies who troll L. Michigan religiously, or work either of the Brule R's.

browns are fun to catch, not so tasty
steel head and kings are yummy.
musky fishin is real expensive. you need a specific rod. I'm a slip bobber nut, had a real nice gary roach slip bobber rod that I used to soak shiners, leeches & med suckers on. landed many northern , bass, trout, walleye, on the pole. not to mention yummy lake Michigan perch.

hooked into a 40" musky in july, it busted that rod to bits. I was running 25lb braid, and a steel leader w/a quick strike rig. it also straightened the treble hook on the quick strike.

i'm more after a meal or two, than a trophy. do a lot of vertical jigging, but always soak a chunk of live bait under a slip float.

you would not believe what I catch with my slip bobber.

this summer two muskies were caught on lake Michigan. one from shore, off of mckinnley pier. i posted the link on here. the other was in racine during a salmon tourney. both were over 40".

48" musky caught from shore

i'm gettin a gary roach baitcaster rod for Christmas. its a pole designed for big musky and northern. i can run braid on it, and it supposed to have some serious backbone to it. plus i can get more leverage with the baitcaster. i'm hoping to use it for salmon and trout also.
