As was brought up we can't really bitch about the refs screwing us because they screwed Miami on the 4th down run. He clearly had the 1st down, but the refs made a bad spot even after they reviewed it. We are just not playing good football right now, thats the bottom line.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

This was a terrible call, and cost us huge. The drive continued to a TD. He wasn't on the LOS never should have been called. We go the benefit on the 4th down we "Stopped" Mia, we got screwed on this, a missed illegal contact/PI on Rodgers INT on the sideline, and Woodson getting ran over and called illegal contact(no game impact).

Officiating has been terrible and very inconsistent at best.

Maybe it's my recollection of history re-writing itself, but I don't recall this board bitching about calls as much as this year.

I agree with PFWT on the 4th down spot, which is my point that the bad calls go both ways. Yes the punt appears to have been a bad call (assuming Francois was in that position at the snap of the ball, like Greg said) but did it really cost us the game?!? Dropped passes by Jordy, short punts in OT, missed tackles, Woody playing 5 yards off and then cutting to the inside as the wr cuts to the sideline, these are all types of things that cost us a game.

Clearly he was over a yard from the ball when the picture was taken. Whether he stayed that far away until the ball was snapped is something that the picture cannot tell us.

Both are incidents in which the referees ALTERED the outcome of a game, not based on anything a player did. Integrity of the game.

What he did after the snap is irrelevant. The rule is about where the player lines up.

I do think that this may be a case of the NFL making an unnecessary rule. Supposedly the rule is to prevent defenders from getting a free shot at the center and knocking him on his butt, but I don't remember that being a problem to begin with. If it was, why wouldn't it happen on plays from scrimmage?

"Greg C." wrote:

Except for kicking plays, the center has a hand free to defend himself. A long snapper does not have that protection since both hands are snapping the ball. The rule was brought into the league because long snappers were being injured from getting piled on head up by multiple defenders. This is a good rule as you don't want to go through the season with back-up long snappers.

There should be some way to review penalties. During the 4th quarter, when a penalty would change possession. When there isn't judgment involved. Something concrete. I haven't thought out the specifics, but the refs (in more than just Packer games) have been more crucial in determining outcomes of games more than I can ever remember.

I didn't know of the rule, so when they announced it and showed the pictures and the replay I thought they made the right call, per Fouts' explanation. I did think it was dumb that this was illegal even though Francois was so far off the ball. Now I know why. Bad call, plain and simple. I don't blame this for the loss, but it sure hurt us anyway. But such is life. The Broncos got shafted by the officials worse than we did yesterday, according to my friend Shane, the Broncos fan.

Nope nerdmann. He went in and blocked the center. it was not to rush the punter it was to keep the center from going down field to make the tackle.
It is amazing how many times the LS makes the tackle on a punt.

I also thought there was an exception to the rule that if an offensive player was in a "threatening" position, ie looks to be in position for a fake punt, that rule about covering the center did not apply. I swear I heard that when a flag was picked up on a Mon/Sun night game.

Much thanks for the explanation, Tezzy. I hadn't thought about that difference: two hands to snap for field goals and punts, but only one hand for shotgun plays.
