I can't speak for Germany from personal experience, but I do remember some of the main characters in the German film
Das Wilde Leben (American title:
8 Miles High, available for streaming online at
Netflix ), which is set in 1970s Hippie Germany, fantasizing about going to America, which they believed to be more more liberal and tolerant of their hippy/nudist commune notions than their homeland.
The irony, of course, is that Germany is now considered far more liberal and tolerant than America. Nowadays nudity hardly raises an eyebrow over there (though Prime Minister Angela Merkel has made some noise about banning public nudity -- "for the children" of course). Times certainly do change.
