The Higher You Live, The Faster You Age

Einstein's theory of relativity works on a human scale: the higher you are, the faster you age

By Richard Alleyne / Source: The Telegraph

Researchers have demonstrated one of Einstein's theories of relativity -- that the further away from the Earth you are, the faster time passes works even on a human scale.

That means -- even though the differences are tiny -- you really will age faster if you live on the top floor of a skyscraper than in a bungalow.

The discovery, made by scientists in the US, confirms a theory first proposed by Einstein -- that clocks run faster the further away from the ground they are.

Although the concept has been accepted for many years, now the difference can be measured for the first time with astonishing accuracy.

Using a pair of the world's most precise clocks, physicists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Colorado, discovered that simply going upstairs will make you age faster.

If one of the clocks was moved just a foot higher, then it ran a little bit faster -- albeit by a tiny fraction of a second.

So, taking just a couple of steps upwards will remove 90 billionths of a second to a 79-year lifetime.

By moving about 10 feet to the top of the stairs, you would age quicker by 900 billionths of a second.

And if you were to spend your life at the top of the 102-storey Empire State Building (1250 feet) you would lose 104 millionths of a second, said one of the researchers, James Chin-Wen Chou.

The experiments used "quantum logic" atomic clocks which can keep time to within one second over 3.7 billion years.

They prove the theory that clocks at higher elevations run faster because they are subject to less gravitational force.

A NIST spokesman admitted the phenomenon, called "gravitational time dilation", would not impact on people's lives.

"The difference is much too small for humans to perceive but it may provide practical applications in geophysics and other fields," he said.

The team's calculations will be used to improve technology used to measure the Earth and the gravitational field.

The findings are published in the journal Science.

The system does work in space rockets and aircraft as the forward movement offsets the height.

This is pretty meaningless. So it's pretty much so slight it's not even measurable.

Dang. Here I was thinking living at sea level would keep me beautiful forever. What a letdown.

p.s. Thanks again for the offer you made yesterday. I'm going to be (even more) pissed about my job for two months because of it, of course. But that's not your fault. Lucky bastard.

Oh well, there's still JPG files.

What is Zombie doing a hot photo shoot or something?

If so.. that will age his ass fastest than any elevation will.

The offer still stands, but it won't for long as I may put an ad out for a young, nubile woman to accompany me.

Our friend in common suggested you make the finals early and buy a plane ticket. I think it's a splendid idea.

Rock is right. (I trust Rock with my deepest secrets). I do little else than take photoshoots.

Other than that (and preparing for the upcoming zombie plague), my life is quite normal.

My wife doesn't like Epica. If I had a date, I'd see the show with my date then immediately drop her off. Nothing more (unless I can talk her into a shoot).

NSD's life is much more exciting. I told Rock that I live vicariously through him and NSD.

Hmm. I'm thinking about starting a "shadow a businessman" program here, but the first step is that I need to shadow some myself to see how it works and make sure its a doable thing (since I'd likely have to do it as an unpaid overload for the college and since shadows by definition don't get paid, it's going to have to be fun rather than "work" for me). Was tentatively thinking about doing one with a friend in the hotel biz in January.

But Rock's reminder tells em that the person I really ought to be [strike]stroking[/strike[strike]]brown-nosing[/strike]trying to shado is Zombie...rofl.

Of course it would kill his business, since the models would want to know what "that sleazy drooling old man in the back" was doing there. :)

Sometimes I'm really envious of people who have marketable skills and therefore cool jobs.
