Green Bay Packers get wake-up call from coach Mike McCarthy at halftime vs. Buffalo Bills
BY MIKE VANDERMAUSE SEPTEMBER 19, 2010

Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy stood in the middle of the locker room at halftime on Sunday, right in the center of the large G on the green and gold carpeting, and had two words for his team.

Flat and sloppy.

That was McCarthys assessment of how the Packers played in the second quarter against the Buffalo Bills and the primary reason why his team was barely clinging to a 13-7 lead at Lambeau Field.

Actually, McCarthy used more than two words not all of them printable and wasnt shy about speaking up.

He likes to raise his voice; thats his way of getting our attention, Packers linebacker Brady Poppinga said. I think for a lot of guys its probably the best way to communicate or otherwise theyre not going to listen. Its just the human nature of us all. When he raises his voice and gives his little look, you tune in, you listen and you take what he says obviously very seriously.

McCarthy gave his team a stern look, and his halftime message was unmistakable. The Packers lousy second-quarter performance was unacceptable, and it was time to drop the hammer.

Thats Coach, he has a lot of fire in him, running back Brandon Jackson said.

Any time Coach McCarthy speaks, he gets our attention. Its just like, you dont want to disappoint him. You want to go out and play your best, play your hardest. He jumped on us a little bit, but we came out in second half and answered.

The Packers transformed a lethargic second-quarter effort into a blowout 34-7 victory and in the process made their coach proud.

Thats not the way we play, McCarthy said of his teams first-half swoon. And we addressed it at halftime and our players responded.

The Bills ran roughshod over the Packers defense in the second quarter to the tune of 62 rushing yards, seven first downs and a touchdown. Meanwhile, the sputtering offense produced minus-4 net yards, no first downs and two punts.

It got so bad that near the end of the first half, McCarthy didnt bother to call a timeout to give the offense one final scoring chance. I didnt like the way we were playing at that particular time, he said.

And he let his team know it in no uncertain terms.

He came in here and you could see it on his face, linebacker Nick Barnett said.

Theres nothing quite like a good old-fashioned butt-chewing to get your blood boiling and your team motivated.

By McCarthy standards, this wasnt nearly as bad as some of his past rants.

In his younger days a few years ago, it was pretty much everything was pretty vulgar, Poppinga said. Nowadays I think its a lot cleaner. I think it would be PG-13ish. You know his tone. Theres a certain tone that he wants to get a message across that you need to listen to. And you listen, you tune in and make adjustments.

The Packers came out of the locker room with ringing ears and fire in their eyes. The defense forced a turnover on the Bills opening drive, and the offense scored touchdowns on its first three possessions.

It was stunningly efficient, and the shell-shocked Bills never had a chance.

We came in at halftime and its like, this is not the ball we play, tight end Jermichael Finley said. Were trying to achieve greatness around here. Were not trying to be average.

Flat and sloppy isnt going to cut it in McCarthys locker room.

Hope he gives a similar speech BEFORE the MNF game and it just has the Packers so fired up they come out and put a straight ass whooping on the Bears.

I am tired of hearing about how good the Bears are...there would be nothing better the Packers coming out and just step on the throats early and then twist throughout the game.

Sorry, McCarthy got me fired up.

That's a coach we like and we need for a young team.

Go MM, I feel like I wasn't a MM fan when we first signed him but I eventually got to like him more and more ... and now I love the guy.

Good. It is about time he got a little more focused on half time adjustments. I want to see two speeches from him. One powerful speech before the game, and one at the half.

There is nothing like a Check Up From The Neck up. A little Bread For The Head.

A thought troubled by any doubt, can not focus on the road to victory. Every player in the room has a doubt, even if it is a little one, and it is the coaches job to erase it, throw it in the garbage can and not allow them to take it out of the room.

My Hero, Mark Twain stated it best:

"You can not depend on your eyes, when your imagination is out of focus."

Close your eyes boy's..., focus, and Imagine. Imagine if you just gave an extra 12 % when you were really gassed. Imagine if you just did the ordinary things, extraordinarily well.

You can make excuses. Or you can make wins. But you can not make both. Choose right now!

The first half is history. The second half is a mystery, but right now, this moment together, as a team, this is a gift.

That is why a gift is called "The Present."

Go out there and focus.

Do not let yourself or anyone in this room down. Not even for one second, of any one play, when you leave this room.

So it seems to me that many are assuming that this is not indicative of typical McCarthy attitude... it seems to me like the players are saying this is typical. I don't see why people are are giving McCarthy an "atta boy" like he's doing something different. I like what he did on Sunday and I expect he's said similar things on many other occasions. Just because someone finally wrote an article on it doesn't mean that this is something new.
