Clifton hurting, so Bulaga might be Packers' LT vs. Bears

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Veteran Chad Clifton remains the Packers' starting left tackle.

That doesn't mean he will start against the Chicago Bears next Monday night.

Clifton was benched in favor of first-round draft pick Bryan Bulaga during Sunday's victory over the Buffalo Bills, and Packers coach Mike McCarthy said he made the move because the veteran "didn't look healthy." Continued knee soreness is putting Clifton's availability against the Bears in doubt.

"He's our starting left tackle," McCarthy said. "He's battling through a rough spot right now medically. We have Bryan Bulaga getting ready. I thought Bryan played well with his opportunity yesterday."

Facing a Monday night game, the Packers would have an extra day to prepare their rookie.

"It helps you, one more day of preparation," McCarthy said. "We'll take advantage of that, and I'm sure Bryan will take a lot of the practice reps this week. We'll make sure Bryan's ready, and we'll do what we need to do to get Chad ready."

Making his first career start against the Bears at Soldier Field could be a big deal for Bulaga, a native of Crystal Lake, Ill. -- although any excitement might be tempered by the prospect of facing Julius Peppers.

Bulaga went into the draft after his junior year at Iowa and was taken No. 23 overall by the Packers.

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said Bulaga played well Sunday, other than a false-start penalty in the fourth quarter.

"Bulaga, from day one, he's fit in personality-wise very well here, and I like his work ethic and I have a lot of confidence when he's in the game," Rodgers said after Sunday's game. "Other than the jump on a hard count, I think he did a nice job for us."

Although Bulaga is expected to become the Packers' long-term left tackle, he was given a chance to compete with veteran Daryn Colledge for the starting left guard job in training camp. Colledge won the job in camp after Bulaga missed time with a right hip flexor injury. On Sunday, they lined up next to each other.

"I know he was nervous, but at the same time, he was extremely excited," Colledge said Sunday. "He got out there, and I thought he did a good job from what I could tell. He had one false start, just like me, so the left side kind of held down the penalties. I think he was excited to get out there and show what he's got."

Colledge called the transition seamless, although the rest of the linemen did try to simplify the calls they make at the line of scrimmage.

"When it's me and Bulaga in there, I just want him to settle down, so I'm going to tell him what we're doing and we're just going to roll," Colledge said. "I thought he did a great job. He was physical in his plays, and he blocked well."

As might be expected of an 11-year NFL veteran, Clifton has a history of knee issues and was receiving medical treatment Monday.

Clifton, who had arthroscopic surgery on both knees and both shoulders before the 2009 season, had swelling in his right knee toward the end of training camp this year and sat out practice.

McCarthy said the team will take the week to determine whether or not Clifton will start against the Bears, and Bulaga likely will see a significant number of snaps at left tackle in practice.

"He's played a lot of football," McCarthy said of Clifton. "He's had a number of surgeries, both knees, shoulders, and it's some wear and tear. We just feel that we need to treat him accordingly. They're trying different things, and hopefully he'll be ready for Chicago. There's really nothing else to talk about."

Clifton isn't going to be of any use as a starter or a back up if they keep letting him just miss a couple practices and go out there hurting. I say put him on the bench to rest up and see what you have with Bulaga. If Bulaga isn't ready you at least have Clifton that much healthier, If Bulaga is ready you have a healthier Clifton ready to come in.

Bulaga will be fine against Peppers.

I think this title should have read, "Clifton shot in face, Bulaga to step-in against Bears"

And yes, Cheney was involved.
William Henderson didn't have to run people over. His preferred method was levitation.

I don't know if Brian is ready for Peppers, but I do know that the Clifton I saw against Buffalo was putrid. He was beaten constantly by a poor DE in Chris Kelsay. The way Clifton has played this season, Brian can't be worse IMHO. He looked pretty damn good in place of Chad on Sunday.

Mucky Tundra (2h) : @AaronNagler · 2m Both Jordan Love and Malik Willis were Limited participants at Packers practice today.
Zero2Cool (5h) : Johnson didn't make it until 2020. Ring 2023. 🤷 Personally, he should have been in years prior to Hall.
Zero2Cool (5h) : HUMP DAY
beast (5h) : Guys that have a good shot at making the NFL Hall of Fame usually get into their teams pretty fast
beast (5h) : Yeah, but is Kampman and the others in the NFL Hall of Fame?
Zero2Cool (5h) : Johnson was Hall of Fame, 2020. Should haev been in Ring a year later, not three years.
Zero2Cool (5h) : I could be wrong there though
Zero2Cool (5h) : Guys like Kampman, Tim Harris, Al Harris, etc all over 15 years. Hall of Fame is 5 year wait
Zero2Cool (5h) : I guess I see players in Packers Hall come way later
beast (5h) : Yeah, usually teams hall of fames are a much lower bar than the NFL
Zero2Cool (5h) : is it uncommon for Hall before Ring?
Zero2Cool (6h) : S Xavier McKinney named first-team All-Pro by NFLPA
beast (7h) : I missed it, sorry, but he got into the NFL Hall of Fame years before that
Zero2Cool (7h) : Jones took his sweet ole time!
Zero2Cool (7h) : Yeah, he's in the ring of honor, just saw video and his name is up there
Zero2Cool (7h) : Didn't they have a thing in 2023 for Jimmy's ring of honor? I swear I saw it
beast (7h) : Though if they're legitimately trying to re-sign MM, then it makes sense.
beast (7h) : Jerry Jones still hasn't put Jimmy Johnson in the Ring of Honor, but he's in the NFL's Hall of Fame, Jones is petty
Mucky Tundra (19h) : Unless the Cowboys are planning an extension, seems kinda petty
beast (21h) : Cowboys denied Bears request
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : From what I'm reading, MM is under contract through the 14th of January; after that he's free game
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : McCarthy let go or not extended??
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Chicago Bears have asked the Dallas Cowboys permission to interview Mike McCarthy for head coaching vacancy
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : The winners page that is
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : I was not hoping for that. It messes up the page lol
beast (6-Jan) : Thank you, and I was really opening we were going to get 4 or more tied for the top 3.

Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : Packers have $60M+ of 2025 cap space on paper TODAY.
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Missed FG into a Lions TD; that'll do pig, that'll do
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : That might be it for the Vikings
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Oh so the refs do know what intentional grounding is
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : what the hell was that Goff?! Not much pressure and he just air mails it to Harrison
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : They really need to to get rid of the auto first down for illegal contact
Martha Careful (6-Jan) : watching the Vikings and Lions it's understandable why they swept the Packers. So much better product
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Even when GB got pressure he was throwing darts; vs no pressure on that last pass he just air mails an open guy
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : didn't have guys in his face ... pressure makes difference
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Where was this Darnold vs GB?
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : BALL DON'T LIE
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : how was that not a safety? Goff throws it at an offensive lineman
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Zero, I thought that was a given! ;)
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Zero I looked through earlier and noticed the same thing. Bonkers year. I just wonder if beast put any money on games
Zero2Cool (6-Jan) : I'm hoping for BLOODBATH. Pummel one another.
