Yeah, I know it's history and we won and I should just be happy with that, but something's been bothering me.

We've had a lot of discussions this week about AJ Hawk and why he didn't play. It's because we were in the nickel and dime all day. My question is, "Why?"

When Kolb went out, why didn't we switch back to base defense? We all know that Vick is more of a threat as a runner than as a pocket passer. Wouldn't that linebacker been more useful than that extra CB?

Probably because they gameplanned for nickel and dime.

But still, it's a moot point, because Vick kept shredding us through the air even though we had 3 CBs.

Teams practice so heavily and scheme themselves week by week it was worth us to probably stay with our game plan than completely fall apart trying to do things we hadn't practiced in over a week. Also, how long had it been since Vick looked like what he did that game? So for me I'm completely fine with sticking with the gameplan. And it's not like we were short LBs from the base defense, remember we only played 2 downlineman, so we still had 4 LBs on the field a lot.

Watching the film earlier in the week.. I asked myself the same thing and it opened a question from last season on in game adjustments I had then.

At times last season, cough MN, I was disappointed in the lack of adjusting to the offense.

But then I watched Vick run around linebacker after linebacker and thought maybe base or a spy backer isn't the correct idea with a talent as only Vick is.. he is just doing to run past them anyway.

I think, in watching, Dom was trying to keep as much depth with his defense as he could while still applying pressure.. with depth he was going to give up yards but not home runs and playing with multiple score lead he figured that they wouldn't have enough time to come all the way back.. and believing we would continue to score.

Listening to Moss on the sidelines in "Replay".. you could tell they were worried about the "explosive" homerun type of plays more so than chunks of yards here or there.

Additionally, while I agree Vick is a average to slightly below average passer.. Mike Vick is going to take hold of that Eagles offense and if he plays at the level of this past week.. may make the Eagles one hell of a dangerous offensive team.. piss on the Cowboys.. I think the Eagles in that case become the division winner in the East.

Vick runs well, but it's mostly scrambles and edge runs. You need more speed on defense to combat those plays. I don't think A.J. Hawk would've had much luck trying to catch Vick.

I think the biggest reason we played so much nickel even after Vick came in was because of our D-line being so depleted.

How did McCarthy shut down the offense this time against the Eagles. Look at the drive charts and playcalls, McCarthy wasn't the issue. Something to also look at the tape from this game was the coverage style. We played under technique, meaning the defenders covering weren't facing the line of scrimmage, so once Vick released it was already too late and they were in chase mode.

When Vick hurt us they were calling pass plays. In order to get back in the game that is what they needed to be calling.

So the question really is do you stay in your base defense and try to defend the pass that way or put in your pass defense? The DC has to make the call.

They got pressure on Vick but in doing so they sold out on containment and that's how he hurt us. If they had all week to prepare for Vick (I know they prepared some for him) I would think you would have, for example, your ROLB pushing the OT back into the pocket but keeping himself between Vick and the LOS. You saw when Vick hurt them his left side was wide open because the LB'r had gone by or was pushed past Vick.

So for me if we had stayed in the base Vick would have probably been fairly successful through the air anyhow. Philly has good receivers and a good TE and I think that's probably why Capers went the way he did.

The ROLB needs to study what Clay Mathews does in this case which is to push the OT back into the pocket but keeping himself between the QB and the LOS. You didn't see vick hurt us over there. It was our right side where he killed us.

That doesn't make any sense. With Michael Vick on the field, you want your fastest people on the field.

DB's are faster than LB's.
