I don't think he's putting a team together that would play well on the field, but rather the best at that position in the division. He picks some weird players, but he used to be a HC, I asume he knows that this exact team wouldn't work in a 3-4.

But yeah, why he did choose to go with a 3-4 is beyond me. Maybe he couldn't choose which ILB he wanted and didn't know which DT should be the nr. 2 one. Lol.

Urlacher gets in on name recognition solely. Dude didn't even play last year! At least have some nuts and pick someone else. Christ, I'm sorry, but I'm so tired of sportswriters anointing Urlacher one of the best linebackers ever, let alone in the NFC North.

And Lance Briggs? Sure, maybe when he was playing for a payday. I don't hear too much about him these days.
