I have a hardware question. At the moment, I'm using my wife's netbook. I have a set of stereo headphones attached to the audio jack. However, the audio is unacceptably quiet. I have every possible Windows audio control I can find set to max, yet the output is still barely a notch above whisper quiet.

Is there any way to amplify the output from a low-end machine like this?

use VLC Player ... its free and boosts I believe 30 percent.

I've asked my half-deaf friend but he doesn't have anything, either. He just bought a better headset that you can put ridiculously loud without any extra software.

check out turtle beach headsets, there for gaming and are extremely high quality and loud, you could probably find a usb jack for them
there is one set for 30 bucks, but thats basically the cheapest
