- zombo looks decent; looks like a strong guy

So overall, I'd say the Browns won in the trenches and the LBs struggled in coverage. That is what stood out to me in the first half.

Question - is it because we weren't being aggressive in the 3-4? I think we gameplanned a vanilla 3-4 with very little blitzing.

Ok. A question for you coach types.

I've heard this "it was a vanilla game plan" rationalization a number of times over the years. And I understand a coach not wanting to do anything more fancy because (i) it reveals what might happen in reg season to scouts and (ii) inexperienced players will be spending too much time thinking and not enough time executing.

So what exactly do coaches look for in a game like this if it is not the quality of performance in said vanilla scheming? Perhaps I'm naive, but ISTM that poor performance should be a concern regardless. And if a vanilla plan can be screwed up by the other guy blitzing a lot, then just what is revealed -- for the team, or for individuals?

Are we supposed to think that Packer player performance depends primarily on the ability of the Packer coaches to game plan better than their opposing numbers?

I guess my standard for a championship team is one that can win without depending on coaching finesse. One that looks damn good even when playing vanilla.

Or am I just all wet?

Guess it's like anything in life. If you become excellent in the basic actions then you have a better chance at being better at more complex actions. So if the coach isn't to be relied on for coaching finesse, then they must be payed big money to teach. So comes back to the basics and executing those. I think the idea that we don't want to show the oppsoing teams any of our looks is bullshiz. I can look at it another way. Of our entire defense I believe the secondary is what needs the most reps. So by the Pack playing a lot of base defense it gave the secondary and LBs a lot of good reps. Just a thought.

Wade - I can't answer all your questions but let me at least say I understand why the vanilla game plan. Just practice the basics. Look at what we did to the Cardinals when they went vanilla and we played the game how it was supposed to be played.

Then they beat us in the Playoffs. Maybe they did the right thing - being vanilla and not showing their hand.

I think we revealed our D in the first game and the Playoff game, they worked around our strengths.

well even thou that article posted we didnt do alot of blitzing - from what I watched in the game; we did blitz and we were not that successful at it. Now granted perhaps we didnt blitz as much as last preseason (if you all can remember how much we did and how dissappointed we were once the season started and capers toned off alot).

my point being I didnt see us getting the job done no matter if we blitzed or ran just a 4 man rush. Seemed quite subpar to me.

Thanks Dulak. I didn't watch the game so just regurgitating what the papers wrote, which I guess was wrong.

Well, it is preseason game #1. Working out the kinks hopefully.

I am the farthest thing from an expert, but it seems to me that if you tell your corners to play in a basic zone defense or off man, then you can analyze stuff like how they read offenses, their closing speed and reaction time (and pass defense ability if they get there in time), tackling ability when squared up, etc..

Of course, I hope that the coaches would like to see how all of these DBs are able to handle press coverage as well. Not to mention how they are able to handle the play calling and execution of Caper's full scheme (kind of important...). Maybe we will see different things focused on throughout the preseason games.

I don't envy the coaches. With a full preseason roster, the 4 games offer very little substance from which to teach your players and cut it down to 53.

I like your comments Wade. I thnk a team should practice how they are going to play.

Look at the old Green Bay Sweep. Everyone knew they were going to run it and the other teams still could not stop it. While they had some very talented players on the team, I have heard time and time again that the play worked because they executed it so well.

I suppose I would rather see a team that executes a few plays to perfection with an opposition who, more or less, knows what is coming instead of a team that has a hundred plays and executes a few of them pretty well and a lot of them about average while the opposition isn't sure what they will be facing.

WPR - Funny that I'm going to counter that with something Wade said in another thread that's not even related to football.

Recent times have seen explosions of knowledge (including the speed of knowledge). What worked one year may not work the next. You have to continually improve or you fall behind.

You give someone last year's playbook and this year, they'll stop it. Not so in the 60s. Information didn't move as fast.

If you take a guy like Sean Payton, he'll keep you guessing. He'll hit you when your pants are still down. That's one reason he wins is because you can't predict him.

I think the Packers sweep would be successful for one year if executed flawlessly and the next year, it would stop working if it was our bread and butter, even with flawless execution. Think in terms of information being on steroids. Opposing coaches will work 60 hours a week to figure out how to stop it, then watch game film of every team and how they fought against it and what worked and what didn't, and have half a dozen paid analysts who are doing the same thing assisting them.

Coach Coughlin figured out how to stop the greatest Offense ever after only 18 games.
