Yep, I noticed later that they're variant spellings. I'd just never seen the spelling with the "e."

The word literally means "swine dog." It's a pretty funny insult.

this opens up real possibilities for fooling the PC among us (who love speaking foriegn phrases).

If someone is bothered by something said, just tell them its a failure to overcome your inneren scheweinehund. They think you're admitting to being an ass (since my guess is they will share the common misapprehension), when in fact you're using in the sense that Gilbert notes: you're saying, in effect, this pinheads don't understand how much they should be offended.
