NSD - Thanks for those 2 links. But it was neither of those. It was someone who was not even associated with football; someone who was a statistics professor or economics professor or something boring like that, but it totally made sense when he explained the numbers.

I think coaches who punt within their opponent's 35 should be beaten and left for dead in Siberia. When I see them do that, I get really, really angry.

If you have an elite QB (in the cases of Rodgers, Brady, and Manning, the three teams you mentioned), you should go for it on 4th down a lot more. Drive opposing Defensive Coordinators nuts. Nothing a DC hates more than seeing his team fail on stopping a fourth down. Makes their blood pressure go up.

That's one thing I've always wanted to see. I want to see an opposing DC lose it and end up rocking back and forth in a loonie bin. That would rule.

Maybe it'll grow on McCarthy in time. He took some daring decisions on 4th down in that last Arizona game.

As for the other two you mentioned, they already go for it at positions where you normally wouldn't expect it. Just look at that 4th and 2 that eventually lost the Patriots the game (which wasn't that bad a call, tbh) last year. And how many times have you seen that video of Peyton sending back the punting unit and picking up the 1st?

Sometimes it pays off, although I wouldn't necessarely kick them off the team.

Mainly because I have a soft spot for the little, fragile guy who gets a roster spot.

Ps. We still should've gone for Shane Lechler. I would've thrown as much as a late 2nd at the Raiders for him.

I know. Most people don't like the idea. He's a little old now, but I would've loved for Ted to have pulled that one off when we cut Sanders.

A punter like Lechler changes the game so much. Getting a first down from within your own 4 is really hard to do.

Punting from pretty much anywhere on the field and your opponents never getting better field position than their own 35 is quite helpful.

He changes the game. He can really help a team.

I say screw it. Let's not have a punter. Save a roster spot for someone more important. In the rare occasions we have to punt, I'm sure Aaron can punt. I mean, how hard is it to kick a ball far?

I remember reading an argument where everyone should just go on fourth down. The thing is, I think the guy was a university professor and he had statistics to back up the argument.

"zombieslayer" wrote:

Those statistics don't factor in that its not likely to go on fourth down repeatedly. If its known you're going to go always, it'll be that much harder to accomplish. You can argue, it gives you more time to practice four down drives, but if you can't get it on three, what makes you think four is going to be that much more successful with the defense knowing its coming?

I'm disappointed in Quarless. Sounds like he might be screwing up a golden opportunity. Might have to start referring to him as Clueless.

They know it's coming on first, second and third down, Kevin, yet NFL offenses still average over 5 yards per play. I don't think that argument holds water. If anything, defenses would begin to get intimidated if they knew they always had to guard against a run or a pass on fourth down.

The paper is 43 pages long and fairly complex. You'd have to read the whole thing to grasp the intricacies of his argument. I think it took me about an hour to read in its entirety.

What's Quarless doing? Or not doing? I saw him drop a TD at family night but other than that I haven't heard much on him.

I think someone is just disappointed he's listed last on the depth chart. But that could be because he's a rookie.

I think he's shown he's not the finished product but most rookies aren't and he's shown that he has the tools and potential to become pretty good to great. I think he'll make the team with out a problem.
