Soil / Environmental Scientist?

Hello all!!

I am posting to see if there are any fellow soil and / or related environmental scientists posting on the forum. It's always good to have a perspective from individuals in the field doing different things. Our occupation obviously isn't booming right now, especially since the housing industry is down. But hey, we're still ticking!!

I'm currently working on my masters of science degree here at North Carolina State University (a land grant school). The title of my thesis is "Mineralization, Plant Availability, and Water Quality Consequences of Nitrogen and Phosphorus in Land-Applied Municipal Biosolids." So obviously my main interests are soil fertility, nutrient management, and water quality, but also wetlands, forestry, land management, and environmental policy. I am currently a member of the Soil Science Society of America, the Soil and Water Conservation Society, and participate in NC's "Muddy Water Watch" program.

If any of you are in the field I'd love to hear about what you do, your struggles, any advice, etc. Also, if anyone is interesting in networking with LinkedIn my profile can be found HERE. .

Good for you Ryan. I am impressed.

I am actually heading out the door in 10 minutes and heading on a trip to the West Coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia. Chasing Coho Salmon I hope.

One of the guys on the trip (Mark) works for a company here in British Columbia. Mark goes into remote areas and does studies on water quality and the effects of logging and soil erosion and development effects to the natural water table.

I envy him. Other than the fact he must deal with Bears and such in a very vigil way. He spends all of his work days in the bush.

What kills me... Is he does not fish. If I had that job I would be in my glory.

Hey thanks bud!! That sounds awesome. How can a man NOT like to fish? I just don't get that. I LOVE fishing.

Also, I would really love to experience Canada sometime. It seems like an incredible area.
