I'm trying to figure out how to articulate this without seeming a cad.

But what makes Steinbrenner such that we ought to give his passing particular attention?

80-year-old men die every day. In fact, he already had about 7-8 years more of life than the average man.

Now, certainly Steinbrenner was economically successful. And if I were a Yankee fan (perish the thought), I'd be grateful for the success he brought my team.

But why is it that we feel compelled to talk about certain 80-year-olds upon their death, and not others. If any of us had a personal relationship with the man, that would be one thing, but as far as I know none of us do.

And, I'm not attacking Green Ninja for starting this thread. After all, I started a similar one when Don Coryell passed a few days ago.

I'm just remarking about how it seems passing strange, this willingness we all have to publicly mourn *some* perfect strangers who have lived a full and successful life. We're not talking here of a Roberto Clemente who was "taken before his time", but someone who lived longer and who had opportunities most never have.

RIP, George.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

I'm a Yankees fan, although I'm just about the most reluctant Yankees fan you'll ever meet, and Steinbrenner is a big reason why. I've never loved a team, yet hated how the team was run like I do with the Yankees. George's sons are no better. It's sad that he died. He's a huge figure in baseball history.

I'll defend Steinbrenner on this front; the Yankees get crap constantly and are hated for spending tons and tons of money for their players, but the Steinbrenners aren't even in the top ten of the richest owners in the league. The Nationals owner is the richest. He can afford do what the Steinbrenners do more than the Steinbrenners can. Pay the big bucks to make your team better, but he never will. At least George gave back to baseball with the product he put on the field and putting his money back into baseball instead of taking all the profits and running.

I don't agree with how he did it, and I never will, but he did it his way and it worked.

Umm, because he had a major impact on one of our most popular sports?

I understand the attention, but not the laudatory tone from so many people. I've always thought of him as one of the great villains in sports. From what I hear, he mellowed somewhat in his later years, but that was after I stopped following baseball.

He "bought" championships with his money. Was it wrong? In the eyes of fans of the teams that can't afford to do that, yes.
But it wasn't illegal.
Until the time comes that the playing field is level (like a salary cap) guys like that will keep doing things like that.

As far as him "laughing in his grave, with all his rings and pennants"........i highly doubt that. He left with what he came in with, nothing.

George Steinbrenner and Jerry Jones represent problems I see with society in a the respect people want to find the quick route to success instead of doing it through good ole hard work.

Why earn it when you can buy it?

I think both men did a great job in assembling winning teams, (Jones in the early 90's did it the 'right' way in my opinion thanks to the Vikings), but George seems to jus buy buy and buy.

Yeah, it was hard to take, growing up as a Brewers fan, when Steinbrenner would just buy the players he wanted. Your point is well-taken that it was not (and still isn't) against the rules to do that in baseball. That's one of the reasons I stopped following the sport.

But even beyond the thing about buying championships, Steinbrenner always seemed obnoxious and egotistical, like the worst stereotype of a New Yorker.

Zero2Cool (9h) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (9h) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (11h) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (12h) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job
dfosterf (13h) : Martha- C'est mon boulot! 😁
Zero2Cool (13h) : Thank you
wpr (13h) : Z, glad you are feeling better.
wpr (13h) : My son and D-I-L work for UM. It's a way to pick on them.
Zero2Cool (13h) : Thank you. I rarely get sick, and even more rarely sick to the point I can't work.
wpr (13h) : Beast- back to yesterday, I CAN say OSU your have been Michigan IF the odds of making the playoffs were more urgent.
dfosterf (13h) : Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better.
Zero2Cool (14h) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.
Zero2Cool (14h) : It is a big deal. This host is having issues. It's frustrating.
Martha Careful (14h) : just kidding...it was down
Martha Careful (14h) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (14h) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Oh snap!!!
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Even Stevie Wonder can see that.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Nah, you see Lions OC leaving to be HC of Bears is directly related to Packers.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ohhhhhhh Zero is in TROUBLE
packerfanoutwest (21-Jan) : Zero, per your orders, check Bearshome, not packershome
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Then he'll land with another team and flourish.
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Ben going to Bears. He'll be out in 3 years.
Mucky Tundra (20-Jan) : what's so funny?
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Bears are finalizing a deal to hire Ben Johnson as their head coach. (via @tompelissero )
Mucky Tundra (20-Jan) : Looks like Lions OC Ben Johnson is going to be the Bears coach
