Here's a short, simple test for Peggy West of the Milwaukee Board of Supervisors and any of you that want to see how well you know the United States. No fair peeking at a map until after you finish. Answers at the end of test.

1. The first and last letters of the alphabet are in Arizona. What are they?

2. This state has the highest point and lowest point within its borders. Not counting Alaska. What state?

3. Which state, not counting Alaska, lies the furthest north?

4. What city in the U.S., not counting Hawaii, lies furthest south?

5. Name all the states that border Colorado.

6. This state has a point where if you poured out a bucket of water, some water would reach the Pacific Ocean, some Hudson Bay, and some would reach the Atlantic Ocean. What state? and extra credit if you can name the spot.

7. California has six National Parks. This state is second with five.

8. This city lies directly North of Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

9. Name the states that physically touch the border with Canada. Water boundaries do not count.

10. This state lies south of Nebraska and north of Oklahoma.

ANSWERS:

1. A and Z
2. California....Death Valley and Mt. Whitney
3. Minnesota......Lake of the Woods
4. Brownsville Texas
5. Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah
6. Montana....Triple Divide Peak in Glacier National Park
7. Utah....Arches, Canyonlands, Zion, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon
8. Detroit, Michigan
9. Washington, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine
10. Kansas

One correct.......you're a Milwaukee Supervisor.
Two or more correct........on your way to A Rhodes Scholarship!!

Considering Mt. McKinley, the highest point in North America, is in Alaska I don't believe this answer is correct.

4. What city in the U.S., not counting Hawaii, lies furthest south
4. Brownsville Texas

I looked at a map after this and, according to the map, Homestead, FL is way south than Brownsville. Beyond that you have Key West which is even further south than Homestead.

As for the rest of the questions, I did a little better than 50/50.

I've got one to add:

Q: Which state is simultaneously the northernmost, westernmost, and easternmost?

A: Alaska - obviously the northernmost and westernmost, but also easternmost because the Aleutian Islands cross the International Date Line (which is widely considered the dividing line between the eastern and western hemispheres).

Looking at a map to decipher what is further north/south doesn't help. You have to look at longitude/latitude. Maps can be deceiving.

I read somewhere that Minneapolis is further North than Toronto.

Exactly Formo! You look at a flat map and Maine is way north of Minnesota, but with the curvature of the earth and latitude and longitude lines, it ain't so.

But yes, Key West is furthest south. I was using an old test that did not include the Keys. This was only mainland items.

Yea I forgot to mention that in my post. I figured it was because a map is flat and as we all know the world isn't 😉

In all honesty the test did say "city" and I don't think Key West really qualifies though I could be wrong.
