Williams likely signed his tender

By Greg A. Bedard

Green Bay - Tramon Williams might have signed with the Packers after all.

A league source close with knowledge of the situation said that Rodney Williams, Tramon Williams' agent, informed the NFL Players' Association late last night that he signed his original tender with the Packers on Monday evening and Williams said "it was sent back to the Packers."

In that case, the Packers should have informed the league in time for Williams' name to appear on the league's internal transaction list.

But Williams' name was not on the list. According to two league sources, the only Packers player that team reported as signed was end Johnny Jolly.

So while there's obviously some paper work to get straight between Rodney Williams and the Packers, the stated desire of Tramon Williams, as far as the union is concerned, was to sign his original contract tender ($3.168 million) with the Packers.

Rodney Williams has not returned several messages left for him by the Journal Sentinel.

Confirmation of Tramon Williams' signing likely won't come until after 4 p.m. today after the league releases the day's transactions, unless the Packers announce it prior to that.

Packers hit the field at 11:15 a.m. today for a voluntary workout.

With the past couple of years and some apparent communication issues surrounding the Packers.. this isn't the type of news I like reading.

Not the Williams signed part.. but the apparent gaff (if the agent is correct) on the Packers part.

No repeat visit from Ari desired. 😉

I do think Williams deserves a contract extension. He's played very well and basically been a starter opposite Al Harris when Woodson has lined up against opposing team TEs and after Al Harris blew out his knee. He'll probably continue that role until Harris is ready to come back. (more than likely in October)

I just hope we'll see some legitimate snaps out of guys like Pat Lee and Brandon Underwood so Jarret Bush can ride the pine and play on special teams like he's supposed to assuming he makes the team.

At this point, it really doesn't matter if Bigby signs his tendor or not. The reduction in pay is minimal over what he made in '09 and with little leverage now, (especially with Blackmon converting to Safety and Burnett probably being the starter at SS) he's just hurting his ability to get significant playing time next year. After two injury marred and mediocre seasons from him, there is no way the Packers are going to give him any sort of extension at this point.

UPDATE: Tramon Williams signed his tender with the Packers before the deadline and will make $3.1 million this season.

Good news! I hope to see him play well and get a nice extension before the end of the season.

PFT was the first to report this, and I was actually hoping it wasn't true, so I would have an excuse to post my screen shot of PFT's "Cardinals Sign Sherman as Head Coach" story.

I think the "Terry Bradshaw Dead" story would have been even better. 🙂

He had no choices except to sign the Packers offer or sit out the season

The Packers have shown a willingness to give contract extensions to players who show up and participate. Greg Jennings is a prime example. If I were Williams, I'd follow his path. Signing the tender is a good way to start.

McCarthy:

(Have you had any recent conversations with Tramon Williams and do you expect him next week?)
Tramon, Atari, I really have no new information for you. As we spoke last week, Johnny Jolly has signed his tender. I have excused Johnny from mini-camp next week. We feel it's important for him to concentrate on his legal situation. But I have nothing new to report on either Tramon or Atari today.

(So you don't know if they signed their tenders, or did they sign their tenders?)
Nothing that I'm aware of before practice.
