More words of wisdom from Dwayne Bowe

by Mike Florio

On Wednesday, word emerged of some ill-advised comments from Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe regarding the practice of "importing."

As it turns out, the story of Bowe's bone-headed remarks to ESPN The Magazine came to light roughly 15 minutes after our friend Nick Wright of 610 Sports Radio in Kansas City harvested some comments from Bowe regarding his relationship with quarterback Matt Cassel.

Asked about the value of having extended time with Cassel, who joined the team in 2009, Bowe said on the air, "It's like an extra year with your girlfriend trying to map things out. You know, those quarterbacks, they're like my girlfriend. No homo."

Bowe said more and Wright said more but the last two words from the quote -- "no homo" -- raised eyebrows. As they should. Even if this phrase arose from hip-hop culture and was used by Bowe with no specific homophobic intent, reasonable minds could conclude that it is both homophobic and offensive.

Some may think it's less offensive that former Chiefs running back Larry Johnson's alleged direction of the word "faggot" to a reporter during the 2009 season, but many likely will think that Bowe at least crossed the same line over which Johnson leaped.

Feel free to share your own thoughts below.

Homo means man.

How is that offensive?

I am a Homo Sapiens Sapiens. So are you.

Now, faggot is a derogatory term for homosexual. However, I always used it in this sense:

Am I'm very far from being a homophobe.

What is it what he says, anyway? That he's not gay? Homo, in this context, is nothing more than homosexual in short, right? Or am I missing something? I don't even see the offensive part in this.

The by-line of this article tells you everything you need to know, my friend.

Homophobia is one of the most idiotic, illogical, and undescriptive words ever to gain currency in the English language. I find the word downright embarrassing and refuse to use it.

I thought the bigger controversy surrounded Bowe's comments was that he said the veterans of the team flew girls out to be ready and waiting in all of their hotel rooms when they went to San Diego for a game. "Importing", he called it.

It is/was. It's just that this one didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. The importing story is here.

Dwayne Bowe lets a rather large cat out of the bag

by Mike Florio

ESPN The Magazine has a feature called "Postcards from the Edge." In it, pro athletes provide anecdotes regarding their lives.

In the latest issue, which hits newsstands Friday, Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe possibly says too much.

"My rookie year, we were playing in San Diego," Bowe says. "You hear stories about groupies hanging out in hotel lobbies, but some of my teammates had it set up so there was a girl in every room. The older guys get on MySpace and Facebook a week before we go to a city; when a pretty one writes back, they arrange to fly her in three or four days in advance. They call it importing."

(The federal government possibly would call it something else.)

"Younger guys don't have the money to do it," Bowe added. "Anyway, these girls had the whole top floor. They know everything about us -- first and last names, sisters and brothers, salary. This one girl was talking to me like she'd known me for years. 'Hey, D-Bowe, how's Grandma?' I'm like, 'How do you know my grandma?' She knew that I talk about her every time I'm interviewed for a story.

"I told her I had a girlfriend, but she didn't care. She was wearing my jersey, sitting in my lap, making it look like we knew each other. Then she took a picture and put it on Facebook. That almost got me in trouble."

Bowe may have avoided trouble that time. But we've got a feeling that trouble will be finding him now.

TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : I think so. I would need to look it up. Think it may have been Carolina's pick.
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : i'm not sure who i'm thinking of now
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : oh fuck me i messed that up
    Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Jordan Davis was 13th overall
    Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Carter was 9th overall
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Eagles had 15th and 10th selections, moved to 13 and 9 to get Davis and Carter back to back
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Eagles traded up for Carter, didn't they?
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : Obviously he was a huge risk but getting a top 5 talent on the dline in the mid 20s is fortuitous
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : Jalen Carter falling into their lap certainly helps
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : And we could only wish to have this type of D
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : It's not like Philly has had low draft picks, but has managed to get themselves a top notch pass rush. We spend so much draft capital of D
packerfanoutwest (10-Feb) : another crap halftime show
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : I think it is over, but then I think of Atlanta and want Philly to go in with the same intensity in the second half
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : And with a Pass Rush that might as well be on a milk cartoon and no Jaire
Martha Careful (10-Feb) : I cant help but feel good about how well the Packers D played in Philly during the playoffs
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : this game is over
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : This might be the kill shot here
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : oh that's such a bad penalty for KC after getting the 3rd down stop
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : Philly DL has come to play
