I visit him twice a day.

In the mornings, I lay with him in his cage.

He was on an IV for the 1st two days, but now he is being given food (very small amounts) and water-also in very small amounts.

His blood sugar is down to 200, and he is not showing the major dehydration that was so very evident early on.

It is very iffy, still.

He is very difficult to handle due to his size, coupled with the fact that he absolutely doesn't allow people to touch his hind quarters (He has been like that since we have had him-abuse suspected from scum-bag previous owner when a pup- long story)

The biggest problem by far is that he cannot stand up and walk, and it is his hindquarters "keeping him down". He has actually regressed since getting there, as he did make it (very barely) under his own power when I took him in Saturday.

He is peeing outside, once a day. (My afternoon visit-he goes for me) With help, we can get him outside for that. He completely runs out of gas with the effort, to the point we have to roll him into a blanket and carry him back in (muzzled-see hind quarters issue) The whole time he is outside he watches the door for Doc Mimnaugh to come and help me bring him in. The trip in the blanket is very obviously painful for him, and he knows it's coming, even as I lie there with him in the grass.

I have got him to walk once about 12 feet, and the docs told me they left him alone this am after taking/helping him outside, and he went about 15 feet while left alone (I strongly suspect an escape attempt) ---

He has to be able to walk. It is as simple as that. The doc seems to think he will be able to. The fasting broke my heart, along with so many other things about him being in there (there's a fucking bird making a terrible racket, along with that bird getting all the dogs going- Not doodle, he is the only one behaving)

I'm taking it one visit at a time, and it just breaks my heart every time I leave, but I think I'm helping him, and that is all I can do.

Wow. That is tough. At least you can still visit him daily. See him. With a bit of luck, he'll be home again soon and you'll only appreciate him that much more because of this.

So your dog has likely been abused, as well? I just can't see why someone would do that. Our dog that passed away a couple of years ago was the sweetest dog I've ever seen. She didn't dare to walk next to my dad when he walked on crutches, though. People over at the dog pound said that she had likely been hit with sticks as a puppy. Absolutely horrible.

Good luck, Dave. I hope that Max will be back, running around again, in a short while.

My heart is with you and Max, Foster. I know the feeling. My baby girl died from birthing complications. Ended up, I was the one that had to bury her as I was the oldest of all my siblings and my dad was out of town. Hardest thing I had to do at that time of my life.

The prayers are working.

He is cooperating with me. Not the vets and staff, mind you---They have been leaving his cage open, and he doesn't budge. No pooping, no peeing, no moving...

...Until daddy shows up.

He rolled out and down the two steps to outside last night---And back up them---later----to go BACK IN (Beyond amazing--he does NOT LIKE being there)

He did the same thing this morning for me. He is standing and walking...He runs out of gas almost instantly, but he just barely can poop and peep.

It is just enough to save his life.

I am glad to hear Doodle is making some improvement.

To paraphrase "What About Bob?" "Puppy Steps."

Our prayers are still going out for you and Max.
My wife and i KNOW what that is like. They are part of our families.
They are our "babies".
Thats what makes it so hard. They love us, and we want to do everything we can to help them.

Hope it all works out for you and your faithful friend Foster!
My best friend is 14 now and though she is still doing well, I try to prepare myself for that fateful day when she will no longer be with me.
