To help ensure that the final weeks of the season will be meaningful, Roger Goodell said on ESPN Radio this morning that every week 17 game will be a divisional match up.

Also, in the last three weeks of the season, there will be 28 divisional games, compared to 15 last year. This is a GREAT decision.

I agree. I wish that the final three weeks were all divisional games. I wish divisional games were the primary arbiter of who gets into the tournament, just as they are in NCAA.

No. It's the team with the best record who gets into the playoffs. Your record in the division is for all practical purposes irrelevant. You could theoretically lose every single divisional game and still make the playoffs.

But the thing is Rourke you have to remember every one in the division plays the same teams but what 2 teams?

Pretty much what I was thinking. If you go 0-6 in the division, but still go 10-0 outside of it and you're the division champion, it's obvious that the rest of the teams in the division are only build to beat their division opponents.

I don't know if that should be rewarded.

Games within the division make enough of an impact as it is, since they make up for 37,5% of the games played and acount for all the tie-breakers, while 8 of the other 10 teams are played by every single team in the division.

If overall record is the most important factor in determining playoff slots, I don't see a compelling reason for having divisions. Simply choose the six teams from each conference with the best records and apply tiebreakers as necessary. You'd probably get a more compelling playoff that way, since it would eliminate the 9-7 teams from weak divisions who sneak in to the exclusion of 11-5 teams who would have had a decent chance had they not had the misfortune to come from strong divisions.

I think one reason to keep divisions is marketability of the rivalries. It's hard to have a rivalry if you're playing the other team once every three or four years.

So you would be happy to maybe have a playoff scenario where 4 teams from the NFC east and 2 teams from the NFC south made up the playoffs? Because the way your talking that could very well happen.

beast (30-Jan) : College Coaches wouldn't want that publicly, as it would hurt recruiting and they might not get the job.
beast (30-Jan) : I thought they were supposed to publicly announce them, at least the NFL ones. Hafley was from college, so I believe different rules.
Mucky Tundra (30-Jan) : Who knows who they're interviewing? I mean, nobody knew about Hafley and then out of nowhere he was hired

beast (23-Jan) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
