A 4 player draft? That would be tough to do.

2009 was a 5 player draft (well, sort of) - CM3, Raji, and Jones. Also add Quinn Johnson and TJ Lang in that mix. Will either of them turn out to be starters? You tell me.

2008 was a 2 player draft - Finley and Sitton.

2007 was a 2.5 player draft - James Jones (will eventually be a starter), Crosby, and Korey Hall who may or may not end up a starter eventually

2006 was a 4 player draft - AJ Hawk, Gregorious, Spitz, and Jolly

2005 was a 2 player draft - Aaron Rodgers and Nick Collins. Poppinga only started 3 games last year so I won't include him.

So I hope Ted Thompson is right. If we can have a 4 player draft out of 2010, it would be a successful draft. Funny looking back at '05, turns out to be a heck of a draft after all for us as we ended up with 2 Pro Bowlers from that draft.

I'm confused as to the 4 player draft where we get 4 starters from this draft. That's.... awfully unlike Ted to think in terms of hinging teh success of the draft on "needing to get 4 starters"...

Word has it that Ron Wolf used to believe if you can get 4 serviceable players (starters or otherwise) from a draft then you've done alright. Patty herself has also expressed her agreement with Wolf's view. Look at this team, with a young and talented core, and it's hard to think we need four starters to emerge from this class to be successful team here or down the line.

The idea that Ted wants 4 draft starters seems like a smokescreen. Or, perhaps it is just a very poorly thought out / articulated "rumour" because it's a very odd thing to hinge a success of a draft on when you're in the position Ted is in.

great read again, thanks joe

A rumor has started to circulate in and around NFL circles. The rumor is the Packers will not take a player in round 1 that has been linked to them (i.e. Charles Brown, Bruce Campbell) but instead they will take a player that many don't think they would take. A couple names that I heard are Jahvid Best, Taylor Mays, Morgan Burnett, Ricky Sapp or Georgia Tech wide receiver Demaryius Thomas.

"Arrigo" wrote:

i'd be o.k. with any of these players (maybe not Mays), but not with #23. All of these guys should be available at the end of the 1st/early second.

Let me expand on Thomas. I was told that Thompson feels he is a bigger, faster Brandon Marshall type player and would be an excellent compliment to Greg Jennings. After watching watching 2 days worth of film on him, I came away impressed with him. While I think he needs to work on his route running and how to come out of his breaks without telegraphing what he is about to do, I think he was a tremendous upside. He has huge hands and an impressive wingspan.

"Arrigo" wrote:

i would be heavily surprised if thomas is the guy Ted Thompson targets. he's just not the type of wr Ted Thompson used to draft. look at jennings, jones and nelson. all were very productive wideouts with tons of catches at "small schools". more of possesion receivers than big play guys like thomas (25 yds/catch vg last season).

I have also heard that the Packers are really looking into adding a 2nd round pick (while not trading back in round 1). I have heard that the Packers want a 3rd selection on day 2 of the draft (rounds 2 & 3) and the Packers have been active in trade talks. The trade talk involves players on their team and draft picks including a possible 2011 draft pick.

"Arrigo" wrote:

i would like to spend a next year's pick to trade up in this draft. according to experts next year's class is much weaker than this year's. however, this would be the first time Ted Thompson trades a future pick, we'll see.

I was told by a person in the scouting community that Ted Thompson wants this to be a 4 player draft in (which he lands 4 eventual starters). He claims that this will not be a "typical Ted Thompson draft" and "look for the Packers to be an active team".

"Arrigo" wrote:

if you get 4 starters out of a class, than your draft is nothing but A. great to hear Ted Thompson will be active in the draft.

Patty (on Packer Chatters) touched on a rumor that had the Raiders wanting to draft Taylor Mays, but not at pick #9. She said that she heard they wanted to trade back into round 1. I did some checking and found out that the Raiders are willing to deal their 2nd and a player to do so. I heard from a scout with-in the Raider organization that there has been talk that the Packers could be the team to deal with. I was told the Raiders could/would offer their 2nd and Thomas Howard, their young outside linebacker should Mays be available.

"Arrigo" wrote:

that's a bit controverse to rumor 1, but o.k. 😉 i don't doubt at all that al davis is interested in mays as his draft board is the 40 yds dash list. i haven't seen much of howard, but i doubt he's worth the late 2nd/early 3rd he should be for this trade. he's good, but not great.

Keep an eye on Jevan Snead and Jonathan Crompton on day 3 of the draft. I have heard that Mike McCarthy really thinks he can develop one of these two young QB's into a nice NFL player. Snead has mre tools to work with, but also that "gun-slinger" mentality, while Crompton was a really good pro prospect until Lane Kiffin got to Knoxville and started developing him last year.

I'm confused just as much as you are about it.

AADP - What he means by a 4 player draft are 4 players who are starters or will eventually be a starter. Like Finley is technically not our starting TE but is there any doubt he will be soon?

OK, bad example. I just looked at the depth chart and he's now the starter. But you know what I mean.

Yeah, Ted Thompson isn't saying he's going to draft 4 players - that is plainly ridiculous.

He's just trotting out the Wolf mantra about getting 4 eventual starters from this draft (like he probably does in every draft).

Do people really think Ted Thompson would tip his hand so much a week before the draft, letting everyone know he's going to be heavily trading up? C'mon man.

I don't think we trade our 1st round pick. But if we do I'm much more confident it would be as a trade-up to grab one of the elite tackles. So the oakland rumor is more of a smokescreen imo.

I'm curious how far Ted wants to trade up in the draft. Is he targeting a tackle or OLB in the early 2nd? Or maybe a corner prospect that might slip into the 3rd? Are we unloading Bush, Poppinga, Colledge, or one of the fullbacks as partial payment? Lots to think about there.

Actually zombie, I didn't know what you meant, but I get what you are saying now.

I took the term "starter" too literally; he meant more like starting caliber players. That makes much more sense.

My reading of his statement made it stick out like Big Ben's p.... ehm, well you get the idea.
