It seemed a bit strange when the Packers signed Khalil Jones to the practice squad in late December. After all, the rookie caught only 13 passes in four seasons at the University of Miami and he wasnt even ranked as one of the top 100 wide receivers available in the 2009 draft. So why did Ted Thompson not only add Jones to the practice squad but then sign him to a futures contract a few weeks later? Well, we may have gotten our answer while perusing through the roster on Easter Sunday. The 24-year-old is no longer a wide receiver. Instead, his job now will be to keep players like Greg Jennings, Donald Driver and James Jones from catching the ball.

Jones has been moved to safety, and all of a sudden, his place on the 80-man roster makes a little more sense. While the odds of the Jones making a successful switch from offense to defense are long, the odds of him sticking in the National Football League as a wide receiver were astronomical. He clearly has the size (6-1, 215) and speed (4.55) to play in the secondary; whether he has the ability remains to be seen. The only thing for certain about this unusual move is that Jones will get a lot more looks on defense than he wouldve gotten on offense in the coming weeks. Thats because there are seven wide receivers on the current roster and only three safeties. Oops, make that four safeties.

I think this could be very interesting...

Personally I think he'll almost certainly get cut. We have a deep roster and there's probably not all that much room for failed wide recievers turned safeties. But who knows, Havner made the switch and Hall used to be a linebacker.

He would hardly get any snaps at WR in camp.

Dont we they usually bring in like 13 WRs for camp? Need lots of QBs and WRs for camp, so i dont think you can say he would have hardly gotten any snaps. Just wait, they'll near double that WR # by the time camp/otas roll around

Nice find, Go.pack.

Didn't see that one coming. This is usually something that takes some time. He'll have to show some really special things to make the regular roster. If he's good enough at KR/PR, that might keep him on the roster while he goes through a transition year.

Again, it's a longshot that he actually makes the roster, but it's an interesting move.

Nahh... offseason stories about these unknown guys almost never pan out. I mean, he can be a good player for all we know, but I'm not sure if it's even possible for him to impress the coaches enough to keep him.

One thing about the Packers they give guys a chance to prove themselves.

Bigby and Havner are guys that were practice squad players that became contributors.

Just because most don't panout is no reason to stop trying. Evey now and then they find a good player.

The Packers have several guys like this in the works.
Obiozor just had a write up on Packers.com
Sometimes these type players just need a lot of coaching and extra work.

Good for Jones, but I remember Brent playing safety in minicamp, too...

He has a chance at safety, imo. Much harder to become a corner. He'll spend a year or two on the practice squad before he gets a chance to prove himself. Unless he can return punts.

Only possibility I see is kind of what they did to Obi last year. Cut him at the end of TC and sign him to the practice squad so they can continue developing him.
