April 8th,2010 On The Sidelines

Here are some rumors that I have heard about.

RUMOR:

n.

A piece of unverified information of uncertain origin usually spread by word of mouth.
Unverified information received from another; hearsay.

The rumor mill is slower this year. I think it may have to do with the draft being 3 days long. So this is the best I can for the time being. Hopefully it should pick up as the draft gets closer.

Add these to the list of players that have or will meet with the Green Bay according to my sources:

QB John Crompton
QB Mike Kafka
QB Jevan Snead
QB Zac Robinson
RB Dexter McCluster
RB Jahvid Best
RB Jonathan Dwyer
RB Ryan Mathews
RB Lonyae Miller
RB Deji Karim
RB Joe McKnight
WR Blair White
WR Dave Gettis
WR Jordan Shipley
WR Damien Williams
WR Mardy Gilyard
WR Eric Decker
TE Nate Byham
OG Mike Johnson
OG Shawn Lauvao
OT Charles Brown
OT Jason Veldheer
OT Jason Fox
OT Kyle Calloway
OT Ciron Black
OT Selvish Capers
OT Chris Marinelli
DE C J Wilson
DT Jared Odrick
DL Tyson Alualu
LB Sergio Kindle
LB Jerry Hughes
LB Sean Weatherspoon
LB Thaddeus Gibson
LB Danny Batten
S Taylor Mays
S Morgan Burnett
S Darrell Stuckey
S Larry Asante
S Nick Polk
S Chad Jones
CB Kyle Wilson
CB Devin McCourty
CB Perrish Cox
CB Patrick Robinson
CB Kareem Jackson
CB Chris Cook
CB Jerome Murphy
CB Kevan Thomas
CB Myron Lewis

I was told by a friend to expect the Packers to draft at least 2 CB's in this draft. He said that the rumor is the Packers want to add not only depth to the CB position, but also speed.

That same friend also told me that the Packers are the team that most teams drafting behind them wants to deal with (as far as trading back). He said that it wouldn't surprise him to see Ted Thompson add at least another 2nd round pick and two 3rd rounders.

I have heard that Mike McCarthy wants to develop another young QB. That may not be a good sign for Matt Flynn. It could show that McCarthy feels Flynn has reached his potential level and is as good as he is going to get.

The interest in Mardy Gilyard is legit from what I was told. I have heard that the Packers like everything about him. They think he can be an elite returner and his passion for the game of football sets him a part from other players. They love how he has turned himself around and that he overcame a difficult situation (without complaining or blaming others).

I was told that the Packers are doing some extensive "prodding" into Jahvid Best's medical records. He is a player that should be there in the later parts of round 1 or even early into round 2 (if they trade back).

The rumor making it's rounds (around the NFL) is the agent for Colledge recently turned down a 2 year extension for 3.85 million and the speculation is that Colledge wants a 3 year, 8 million dollar deal. Another Colledge rumor has the Packers making him a full time LT (and backing up Clifton if he isn't the starting LG).

I have heard that the Packers have been shopping Brady Poppinga LB and Donald Lee for some time, but no team is interested.

An interesting rumor surfaced that has the Packers (quietly) listening to offers for Nick Barnett. Also, keep an eye on the Rams as a possible trade partner for Jarrett Bush. They wanted him last year and like his special teams play and flexibility in the secondary.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and feel free to tell a friend about the site. Also, don't forget to sign-up for the forums (if you haven't already).

I'd like to see Colledge full time at LT ( I've said this several times ) for one season and see how it goes. No more bouncing him around. If he tanks LT, cut your losses.

Rams, what??

The Rams and Titans showed the most interest in Bush last off season. I heard that they would give up a mid-late round pick (actually 4 or 5 in 2010) for him.

I do think that no matter what, Bush will be gone (one way or another)

We would be lucky to get a 6/7th rounder for Bush.

Gilyard is very dangerous after the catch and would fit very nicely in our style of play but I see him being drafted in the 2nd or 3rd round and I doubt Ted Thompson will take a WR that high.

As for Mike McCarthy wanting another young QB to teach I don't see that as a bad for Fylnn. If they were to sign a Vet QB I would see that more of a warning sign for Fylnn.

I'm also almost positive we'll end up trading back in the 1st round to pick up extra picks unless a player Ted Thompson really likes drops to #23. This is a very deep draft so the more picks the better for us.

As for Jahvid Best I don't really want to waste a high pick on him, I'd rather just pick up McCluster or McKnights in the later rounds. I really hope Matthews falls to #23 because I could see a lot of teams wanting to trade up to get him.

mm might want another development QB because there are other teams putting feelers out there to trade for Flynn. There could be a positive spin on it too. I haven't heard anything on it though, it's just speculation on my part.

To be honest, one must always mitigate MM's interest in young QBs through the knowledge that he has spent extensive time coaching and tutoring QBs. That's is what led him to where he is now - becoming identified as an expert in developing QBs. I'm sure he wouldn't mind adding a young talented QB through the draft, but developing a young QB can also occur on the Practice Squad. That is to imply that we need not draft a QB for McCarthy to get a chance to develop him.

As for some of the players mentioned - WR, QB, etc. - I think it's probably likely that the Packers are just doing their homework in the remote chance that they have are in a position to acquire a player drafted by another team later on - be it through free agency of a trade. Ted mentioned in the Martin trade that he used a lot of his notes from when pre-draft workouts to assess Martin's strengths and weaknesses before trading for him.

You know what? So would I. He deserves a shot, I guess. I always thought it was his more natural position.

I think the 90's Packers had it correct...always try to add a mid to late round QB to develop and use for a future chip if needed. Look what the Chargers got out of Whitehurst... or the Pats out of Cassell.

Seriously.. how many 3rd round or better picks did that add to our roster in the 90's... I would guess a couple.

Detmer
Brunnell
Brooks
Hasselbeck

Then solidify the position with a veteran.. well Flynn is that veteran and a guy like Zac Robinson may be the understudy to develop.

As much as I despise the snot nosed, "candy ass" pretty boy QB's... I know that you can never have too many of the good ones.

If nothing else.. they make good tackling dummies in camp. 😉

Yeah, I like Zac Robinson, maybe with the 5th round compensatory pick, too pack93z. I've eyed him ever since the Senior Bowl, where he was the balls.

I'd love to see more speed at CB and hope this rumor is true. The NFL is simply getting faster, and you NEED 3 CBs. Too many elite teams whip out 3 WR sets consistently.

beast (14h) : Also why do both NYC teams have absolutely horrible OL for over a decade?
beast (14h) : I wonder why the Jets always hire defensive coaches to be head coach
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Martha- C'est mon boulot! 😁
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you
wpr (22-Jan) : Z, glad you are feeling better.
wpr (22-Jan) : My son and D-I-L work for UM. It's a way to pick on them.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : Thank you. I rarely get sick, and even more rarely sick to the point I can't work.
wpr (22-Jan) : Beast- back to yesterday, I CAN say OSU your have been Michigan IF the odds of making the playoffs were more urgent.
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.
Zero2Cool (22-Jan) : It is a big deal. This host is having issues. It's frustrating.

dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Oh snap!!!
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Even Stevie Wonder can see that.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Nah, you see Lions OC leaving to be HC of Bears is directly related to Packers.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ohhhhhhh Zero is in TROUBLE
packerfanoutwest (21-Jan) : Zero, per your orders, check Bearshome, not packershome
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Then he'll land with another team and flourish.
