Tebow's pre-Wonderlic prayer request falls flat

by Mike Florio

As we've mentioned once or twice, quarterback Tim Tebow's habit of openly expressing his religious beliefs could potentially rub folks the wrong way, especially in a locker room of grown men who choose to keep their beliefs to themselves, who don't share his beliefs at all, and/or who only want to hear "God bless" after they have sneezed.

We're told that Tebow already has gotten a taste of the resistance he might face at the next level.

At the Scouting Combine, the Wonderlic exam is administered to players in groups. The 12-minute test is preceded by some brief instructions and comments from the person administering the test.

Per a league source, after the person administering the test to Tebow's group had finished, Tebow made a request that the players bow their heads in prayer before taking the 50-question exam.

Said one of the other players in response: "Shut the f--k up." Others players in the room then laughed.

We're not passing judgment on this one; we're just passing along what we've heard. And it illustrates the type of challenges that could be faced by the team that drafts Tebow.

That said, some teams might embrace those challenges. The final decision will depend largely on the composition of the team, and the personalities of the coach, the G.M., and the owner.

I have to admit that I'm pretty much in the middle on this one.

On one side, it looks an awful lot like someone pushing his believes onto other people.

On the other side, the STFU remark is way over the top (most likely) and going into prayer like this is something that pretty much every NFL player and NFL team does, even during injury time-outs.

I do know that I can't help but feel a little bad for him. He sounds like such a great person, even though he does come over as a little naive from time to time.

He could have phrased the request a little differently. "Hey, if anyone would like to join me for a moment of prayer before we start this test, bow your head with me."

That's the interesting thing, the article doesn't state how he asked it.

Personally I don't think it matters how it's asked. Religion is a private issue, between you and God. If you want to pray, go ahead. If other people want to join, that's their prerogative, not yours to round up people for a mini-mass.

I also don't agree with the method of refusal by the other player either, which I hope reflects poorly on his demeanour in the eyes of potential teams.

You only do that if you don't want others to pray with you. I'm pretty sure he wasn't demanding a prayer be said prior to the test (and if he did, I'll accept that I'm wrong and appologize), he asked. The asking part is his prerogative. If someone doesn't want to, they don't have to.

BTW, religion is religion. God's calling for all Christians is to spread His word. You are basically saying that people should keep their spiritual beliefs to themselves. Which is against what America stands for, but also against what Christians are called to do.

I agree with Non.. He probably should have used better terminology/people skills when offering/asking about the prayer. Most Christians need some people skills when dealing with non-Christians. My assumption is that Tebow used the wrong way of 'asking' about the prayer, which got him the harsh response of STFU.

Well, I had no idea that was the case. Does this make my suggestion a restriction in free speech or is somehow ostracising religion? That of course isn't my intention, all I can say in my defence is that keeping one's privacy is important to me, and I naturally extend that with regards to personal beliefs such as religion in the general public.

Christianity is an inherently proselyting religion, so technically, to keep one's beliefs to oneself is a direct violation of Jesus' commands. The tricky part is how to proclaim "the reason for the hope that you have . . . with gentleness and respect," as Peter says in 1 Peter 3:15. When someone announces their faith, someone will inevitably be offended -- that's human nature. The never-ending challenge is to be open about one's faith in a manner that draws the most people to your beliefs and repels the fewest away.

Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

You mean that you can't talk about your religion at all in schools? Or that you can't have a combined prayer on a non-Christian school, where people from all kinds of religions go to?

We used to have 'God zij met ons' ('God be with us') on our money. I didn't mind at all. I can see, though, with the amount of atheists, muslims etc. increasing, I can see why that's taken off of the money.
