i know this has been brought up a few times before but i'd like to know kinda your guys opinion on the guy.

my opinion (feel free to ignore): his coverage ability is OK esp. compared to our other LBs. after all, he was the only one who got any picks.

I'm interested to hear other's views as well.

One thing is for sure he won't be playing in Green Bay next year under his current contract, which will pay him $10m+. He'll either be given a new deal, cut, or traded with the proviso that the new club signs him to a new contract.

I don't know why teams agree to contracts like this. At least if you have a deal which can run its course and you let him hit free agency you can get up to a 3rd round compensatory pick for him. Cut him and you get nothing.

He is ok ... IMO not worth the dough they are dolling out thou. Barnett did very well considering he had ACL surgery. We still have bishop (whom IMO should be given much more of a opportunity then what he has gotten). And chillar our pass coverage LBer.

I believe he is adequate and you can win with him. Certainly not what we were hoping for, a big time impact player. I'm still hoping for a breakout but I'm not holding my breath.

He's been almost exactly what he was expected to be (note: this doesn't include fans who let the draft position influence their expectations - this is per what most draft-heads were saying): A solid, if not terribly exciting player. If Bishop can stay on the field and not make glaring mistakes then I'm fine with him supplanting Hawk, but until that happens it's nice to have a guy who's at least dependable on the field. I give him at least partial credit for that number one ranking against the rush.

this is in no way a knock on hawk, because i don't see why he gets hated on so much, but the pick he had this season (at least the only one i remember) was from a moron quarterback who threw it directly to him in the open field when there were no receivers in the area.

Analysis
Positives: Has a thick upper body with broad shoulders, tight waist, good bubble and excellent timed speed for his position Has loose hips and above average balance, keeping his feet on the move Shows natural knee bend and has a sudden burst coming off the edge to defeat the lethargic offensive tackle (see 2005 Texas game vs. Jonathan Scott) Understanding blocking schemes and is quick to locate the ball Very capable of taking his impressive weight room totals and translating it into his play on the field Can shed blocks consistently and has the upper body power to create a pile Tough inside force vs. the run who moves well through traffic to locate the ball Plays at a low pad level and uses his hands effectively to reroute the tight end Has fluid and explosive range outside the box, using his hands to sift through traffic and generates the burst needed to play on the edge Has excellent speed to close on the ball, demonstrating the balance and body control, along with quick feet to move down the line Big hitter who will strike with force and has the strength to explode behind his tackles Has the athletic agility, loose hips, valid speed and a strong desire to take on receivers in man coverage Plays with a quick, controlled backpedal, showing the looseness in his hips to open and play the ball

Gets very good depth in his pass drops and does a fine job of reading the quarterback and reacting to the ball, using his leaping ability and timing to break up the pass Does a good job of reaching and plucking the ball away from his frame Moves forward with quickness and good urgency on the blitz and has above average flexibility to counter blocks and close on the passer.

Negatives: Generally alert player, but can get a little reckless in his play and over-pursue, especially on run fakes and play action Very combative with his hands, but does not have that strong lower body power needed to hold ground at the point of attack vs. larger blockers Attacks with good aggression, but a lack of ideal size will see him get bounced out of the rush lanes when trying to fill working in-line Needs to play with a wider base to prevent offensive tackles from washing him out along the edge.

Hawk is a punishing open field tackler with valid speed and explosion for his position. He is a bit on the short side, but compensates with excellent acceleration and outstanding read-and-react ability. He has the strength to explode into ball carriers and takes good angles in pursuit to string plays out. He has above average upper body power, but could use more lower body strength, as he plays with a narrow base and can be washed out by the larger offensive tackles if they lock on to him coming off the edge.

Hawk plays at a high intensity level, showing good urgency closing on the play and pressuring the pocket. He developed more effective swim and rip moves to get an edge on the offensive tackle and the result was 9.5 sacks in 2005. He plays with true aggression and while he sometimes gets reckless in his play, he will hit with authority. His range and lateral agility is the best I've seen in a linebacker outside of Brian Urlacher and much like the Bears standout, he has the natural knee bend to deliver punishing shots when tackling.

Hawk has the range to work down the line and generates a very strong hand punch to push the pocket. He is effective at jamming and rerouting tight ends and runners coming out of the backfield and has enough valid speed to stay on the hip of receivers past the intermediate area.

Hawk is an outstanding blitzer who has the natural feet and hip explosion to constantly disrupt the backfield. He is so instinctive that he has a knack for getting into the pocket almost at will. He closes with good urgency and does a very good job of breaking down and wrap tackling when working in space. He is better on the move than when asked to take on blockers working in-line, as he does not have the size or wide base to maintain his position at the point of attack, especially vs. double teams.

Hawk has nice pass rush moves and charges aggressively coming off the edge. He also shows valid hand extension to reach and pluck the ball at its high point. Much like David Pollack (Bengals), he simply has a natural feel and flow for the ball. He is an excellent sideline-to-sideline player who needs to be accounted for whenever on the field. With improved lower body strength and a better base, he will be as close to a complete line-backer as one can find.

Scouting Reports
"Pros: Refined in every area of the game into a complete defender -- instincts, athleticism, big-play ability, intangibles and top production. A durable player who will play through minor bumps and bruises without complaint and will do what it takes to always answer the bell. Has excellent instincts and is an extremely consistent player and outstanding competitor. Reads plays well and flows quickly to the ball. Is hard to fool with any type of influence play and readily reacts properly to draws and screens, showing the ability to get through traffic and beat blockers. A powerful tackler who explodes to the ball, usually with sound technique to finish the play. He uses his hands well to shed blockers with the speed to pursue sideline to sideline. In pass coverage, he is a fine athlete with the fluid hips that allow to him to turn and change directions easily to match up in man coverage and make plays on the ball.
Cons: Continues to improve as a pass rusher and shows the savvy to blitz off the edge on the delay, or the snap, with good angles to the passer. He improved at gaining an edge in 2005 and avoided getting picked off en route to the passer. He is capable of playing the strong side, but would be challenged more physically there at just 6-foot-1 and 240 pounds.
Numbers: As a senior he made 121 tackles with 16.5 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, 1 interception, 3 passes defended, 1 fumble recovery, 2 forced fumbles and 1 blocked kick. At the Combine, he ran a fine 4.65 with a 40-inch vertical jump and 9-foot, 7-inch broad jump. His 20-yard shuttle and 3-cone drills were outstanding. He did 24 reps in lifting."

These are only 2 but I'm sure I can find many more. IMHO we have not gotten what we expected. What I recall is Hawk was the most sure thing. Williams was the big question mark. Hawk certainly has the measureables. I believe part of it is coaching, that's why I still have hope.

Well if that is the hopes.. then don't hold your breathe.

Winston Moss was his position coach under Sanders.. and remains it today.. much to my dismay. 😉

Restructure Hawk's deal and let him play in the 3-4. He was not a 4-3 outside linebacker. He's a decent player but not a superstar. It is not his fault he came out in a weak ass draft.

I have a lot more problem paying Poppinga what he is getting, than I do a guy getting 100+ tackles a year, being overpaid because of where he was drafted. I still think Hawk needs to do one thing, get a buzz cut and keep a cut on his nose so it bleeds every game.

He tracked a TE/receiver down the middle of the field, turned, and snagged the pass in close coverage. That's the only one I remember, and I remember it because they showed the replay a bunch of times showing how it was picture perfect coverage by a LB.

Martha Careful (1h) : I hope all of you have a Merry Christmas!
Mucky Tundra (11h) : Oh I know about Jacobs, I just couldn't pass up an opportunity to mimic Zero lol
buckeyepackfan (11h) : Jacobs was just sat down, Watson re-injured that knee that kept him out 1 game earlier
buckeyepackfan (11h) : I needed .14 that's. .14 points for the whole 4th quarter to win and go to the SB. Lol
Mucky Tundra (11h) : Jacobs gonna be OK???
    Zero2Cool (12h) : Watson gonna be OK???
packerfanoutwest (15h) : Inactives tonight for the Pack: Alexander- knee Bullard - ankle Williams - quad Walker -ankle Monk Heath
packerfanoutwest (15h) : No Jaire, but hopefully the front 7 destroys the line of scrimmage & forces Rattler into a few passes to McKinney.
packerfanoutwest (15h) : minny could be #1 seed and the Lions #5 seed
Zero2Cool (18h) : We'd have same Division and Conference records. Strength of schedule we edge them
    Zero2Cool (18h) : I just checked. What tie breaker?
bboystyle (18h) : yes its possible but unlikely. If we do get the 5th, we face the NFCS winner
    Zero2Cool (18h) : Ahh, ok.
bboystyle (18h) : yes due to tie breaker
Zero2Cool (18h) : I mean, unlikely, yes, but mathematically, 5th is possible by what I'm reading.
Zero2Cool (18h) : If Vikings lose out, Packers win out, Packers get 5th, right?
bboystyle (18h) : Minny isnt going to lose out so 5th seed is out of the equation. We are playing for the 6th or 7th seed which makes no difference
Mucky Tundra (19h) : beast, the ad revenue goes to the broadcast company but they gotta pay to air the game on their channel/network
beast (19h) : If we win tonight the game is still relative in terms of 5th, 6th or 7th seed... win and it's 5th or 6th, lose and it's 6th or 7th
beast (19h) : Mucky, I thought the ad revenue went to the broadcasting companies or the NFL, at least not directly
Zero2Cool (20h) : I think the revenue share is moot, isn't it? That's the CBA an Salary Cap handling that.
bboystyle (20h) : i mean game becomes irrelevant if we win tonight. Just a game where we are trying to play spoilers to Vikings chance at the #1 seed
Mucky Tundra (20h) : beast, I would guess ad revenue from more eyes watching tv
Zero2Cool (20h) : I would think it would hurt the home team because people would have to cancel last minute maybe? i dunno
beast (20h) : I agree that it's BS for fans planning on going to the game. But how does it bring in more money? I'm guessing indirectly?
packerfanoutwest (21h) : bs on flexing the game....they do it for the $$league$$, not the hometown fans
Zero2Cool (21h) : I see what you did there Mucky
    Zero2Cool (21h) : dammit. 3:25pm
    Zero2Cool (21h) : Packers Vikings flexed to 3:35pm
Mucky Tundra (22h) : Upon receiving the news about Luke Musgrave, I immediately fell to the ground
Mucky Tundra (22h) : Yeah baby!
    Zero2Cool (22h) : LUKE MUSGRAVE PLAYING TONIGHT~!~~~~WOWHOAAOHAOAA yah
Zero2Cool (23h) : I wanna kill new QB's ... blitz the crap out of them.
beast (23h) : Barry seemed to get too conservative against new QBs, Hafley doesn't have that issue
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : However, we seem to struggle vs new QB's
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Should be moot point, cuz Packers should win tonight.
    packerfanoutwest (23-Dec) : ok I stand corrected
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Ok, yes, you are right. I see that now how they get 7th
    Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : 5th - Packers win out, Vikings lose out. Maybe?
beast (23-Dec) : Saying no to the 6th lock.
beast (23-Dec) : No, with the Commanders beating the Eagles, Packers could have a good chance of 6th or 7th unless the win out
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I think if Packers win, they are locked 6th with chance for 5th.
beast (23-Dec) : But it doesn't matter, as the Packers win surely win one of their remaining games
beast (23-Dec) : This is not complex, just someone doesn't want to believe reality
beast (23-Dec) : We already have told you... if Packers lose all their games (they won't, but if they did), and Buccaneers and Falcons win all theirs
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I posted it in that Packers and 1 seed thread
    Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I literally just said it.
packerfanoutwest (23-Dec) : show us a scenario where Pack don't get in? bet you can't
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Falcons, Buccaneers would need to win final two games.
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Yes, if they win one of three, they are lock. If they lose out, they can be eliminated.
