The problem for the DB's in the Arizona game was that with the Cardinal receivers the only way to keep the game in check was for them to KNOW Warner would not be able to burn them deep. Having both options available gave them no room to move up and take away the short stuff because they knew he would just go over the top of them.

The problem IMO started with Jones. The Cardinals immediately saw that he was being handled over there. That gave all the OL left of the RT the luxury to concentrate on the middle and afforded doubles CM3. That left a wide open view of the fielf for Warner.

Had it been the other way around and the RT NOT been able to keep our ROLB out it would have been a whole different ballgame. Had the DB's recognized Warner would NOT be able to go over the top of them, or, at least not enough to hurt them too badly...well...we've all seen how they play when they have that confidence.

The 3-4 is a pressure defense. It's all about putting the QB on his back or at least getting him running forcing the ball out early and inaccurately. Also, they want that pressure FAST. Right off the snap they want the QB feeling it. Without that pressure the schemes to defend the pass will SUCK. It's not built to ask DB's to run around out there hip to hip with WR's. It's just not.

Hell, we can't even rush two and put nine guys back there and defend a pass. If I had one thing I could ask Dom it would be to DITCH that defense. Everytime I see two men rushing I know somebody is going to be catching the football for a first down.

Yes the 3-4 is a pressure defense.. committing 5 to the line of scrimmage dictates that you want to apply pressure to the 5 and 6 man lines..

But when the receivers were open in the seconds... you can't get there.. check out the highlights... mark 56 seconds is an example. another at 1:34... 5:34 is another..

BTW.. that is a hell of a game yet.

That's great scheming by the Cardinals to take advantage of our DBs, though. They run a lot of those routes. It looked like we couldn't do anything against it.

A little press there might've done wonders. Like Warhawk said, though. we can't even get to the QB instantly. Against that horrible O-line. Bigby doesn't have the range to be that good of a help in coverage there. If they get over the top, we're done. That leaves them free to abuse the middle on routes like that. Especially with an inexperienced Bush out there.

The scheme was great... I stated that.

The plays passes were out... in 3 to 4 beats.. I have stated a number of times the best pass rush can't get there.

The confusion and lack of leadership in the secondary is evident.

I rest my case. lol.

I know what you mean. And playing press against plays like that would be great. Problem is, if your pass rush can't get there, you can't play it risky and go with press, because you'll get burned if they do go deep and your OLB(s) can't get there in time. Which is our problem right now.

Try and play press on Fitzgerald, gambling that they'll run some more slants, outs etc. and have him streaking down the field, losing Woodson after the jam and one on one with Bigby.

I can tell you who's going to win that one 9 out of 10 times.

Now, in hindsight, that might've worked a lot better than what we did in that game.

With the stacked sets... that is why IMO we backed away from the press... that and Harris on the sidelines and a bunch of Green horns out there.

That still doesn't excuse us for the lack of defensive calls and adjustments back there with communication... that first touchdown pass is a prime example... you have two guys going outside and left the guy running free inside... I don't see how having another pass rusher helps these quick breakdowns..

I will say it again.. we need a strong communicator with a high football IQ paired with Collins.

I know. Normal IQ does not mean football IQ, but he has some vision. Can be a field general. Whatever he lacks in physical ability, he makes up for with football smarts.

It's amazing how I've turned half of the threads on this board into draft threads. This one's going way off-topic again. Sorry, lol.

Color me tickled 'green' if Rolle become a Packer.... it would fit the bill I am talking about... Collins is such a beast physically that the other doesn't need to be Superman... just a solid safety the can make the adjustments pre-snap.

I keep thinking Eugene Robinson in the 90's... towards the end physically when he got here.. still very solid... but dude was smart on the field. Paired with Butler whom had a similar skill set and was also football smart... damn that was a pair back there.

I remember banging the drum for Rolle last year. I do wonder how a year away from the game will affect his sharpness on the field, however.

Wow. I change my mind on my opinion of that game. It looks like every single big play by the Cardinals, we simply didn't have time to pressure as Warner got the ball off instantly. So yeah, even if we had Reggie White on one side and Bruce Smith on the other, it would be a non-issue. Warner got the ball off too fast.

Kudos though to the Packers. Down 17-0 and 24-7, we stayed in the game and kept coming back. Sad ending though. Jennings looks amazing as did Finley.

I was overall impressed by the D myself. Obviously the run defense showed through the best. The secondary was fair, but hard to criticize when most of our starters were battling injuries.
I would expect to see a very impressive D this next season now that they have seen the abilities within the roster. Also likely to see more aggressive playcalling, as we have seen what being too passive causes. If our secondary can stay healthy, we should be fine.
