Capers talks up Packers' defense
The Packers defense has made great strides in the past year under coordinator Dom Capers. During a Fan Fest session with the general public today, Capers had plenty of good things to talk about.

The Packers defense was ranked No. 2 in the NFL last season. The defense was No. 1 against the rush and produced the best per-game rushing average in franchise history. The Packers were No. 1 in takeaways and turnover differential. They led the league in interceptions.

Three different times during Capers roughly half-hour presentation, fans interrupted him with applause. Once it was to acknowledge the run defense, once to cheer Clay Matthews terrific play in which he stole the ball from the Minnesota Vikings Adrian Peterson and ran for a touchdown at the Metrodome, and once to cheer defensive player of the year Charles Woodson.

The loss of pass rusher Aaron Kampman in free agency to the Jacksonville Jaguars didnt even phase Capers. He pointed to the Packers No. 11 ranking in total sacks in 2009 and said the clear goal of the Packers this year is to become a top-5 team in terms of sacks.

Capers didnt go into details about how the Packers will do that. He spoke glowingly about right outside linebacker Matthews and showed numerous examples on video of his play-making ability. But he didnt say who was going to play outside linebacker on the left side opposite Matthews, presumably a hot spot where sacks can be generated.

Despite the Packers accomplishments on defense, Capers acknowledged the team has a long way to go. The defenses meltdown in games against the Vikings, Steelers and in the playoff game vs. the Cardinals are prime examples of just how much room for improvement the Packers have left themselves.

Capers was asked specifically about the defenses struggles against top-flight quarterbacks and what he planned to do to rectify that problem.

Capers said improvement of players, an upgraded pass rush and adjustments in schemes all can contribute to improvement.

Capers said he is aware every opponent next season will go back and look at the film of the Packers losses to the Steelers (37-36) and the Cardinals in the playoffs (51-45) and attempt to exploit his defense.

How well we respond to that, and whether thats done by personnel, (scheme), those are all things we evaluate, said Capers. Theres not a team in the league that doesnt have a game or two like that during the course of the year.

This is a humbling businessThats why we have make sure were ready to go out and play at a high level every week.

This game is a game of emotion, its a game of momentum, its a game of how you respond when things are against you. We can make great strides in that area, handling adverse (situations).

I like that goal of being top 5 in sacks. Can't wait for the draft to see who we add to the puzzle and the first game of the year.

Somehow I think Greene's project in Cyril Obiozor might play into the pressure packages...

Personally I'd carry Obiozor over Poppy and Thompson easily. Though I always liked Thompson he was just mysteriously "injured" and inactive last season.

I just thought it was a neck 'stinger' which = the above (but then again I'm just going on hearsay).

He sounded good - wonder what is really going on with the guy. I sent the packers a email about how they should get him to a chiro and get him taken care of.

We need someone dominant on the left side is all I know. Someone to take on the right tackle there and own him.

I'm ready to move on from Poppinga and give some of the younger guys a chance. He's pretty much hit his ceiling as far as what he's capable of and is only going to become a more and more expensive backup when younger guys can do at least a comparable job for cheaper.

It's going to be one of the more interesting training camps, especially after we see who Thompson brings in from the draft.

I agree never really liked pop - I mean he was about average but nothing that great.

Just like what was said about the arizona game ie they could use just one guy on our left side and consistantly dbl matthews ... thats no good.

Zero2Cool (3h) : sounds like Packers don't get good compensation, Jaire staying
dfosterf (7h) : Nobody coming up with a keep, but at x amount
dfosterf (7h) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (8h) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (8h) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (8h) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (8h) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (8h) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (8h) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (8h) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (8h) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (8h) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (9h) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (9h) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (9h) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (9h) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (11h) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (11h) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (11h) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded. He's never happy is he?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : two 1sts in 2022 and two 2nd's in 2023 and 2024
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers had fortunate last three drafts.
dfosterf (15-Apr) : I may have to move
dfosterf (15-Apr) : My wife just told the ancient Japanese sushi dude not enough rice under his fish
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I think a dozen is what I need
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Go fund me for this purpose just might work. A dozen nurses show up at 1265 to provide mental health assistance.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Maybe send a crew of Angels to the Packers draft room on draft day.
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I am the Angel that gets visited.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Visiting Angels has a pretty good reputation
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : what
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : WINNING IT, not someone else losing it. The best victory though was re-uniting with his wife
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : The manner in which he won it was just amazing and wonderful. First blowing the lead then getting back, then blowing it. But ultimately
Zero2Cool (12-Apr) : I'm guessing since the thumb was broken, he wasn't feeling it.
dfosterf (10-Apr) : Looking for guidance. Not feeling the thumb.
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : If they knew about it or not
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : I don't recall that he did which is why I asked.
Zero2Cool (10-Apr) : Guessing they probably knew. Did he have cast or something on?
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : Did they know that at the time or was that something the realized afterwards?
Zero2Cool (9-Apr) : Van Ness played most of season with broken thumb
wpr (9-Apr) : yay
Zero2Cool (9-Apr) : Mark Murphy says Steelers likely to protect Packers game. Meaning, no Ireland
Zero2Cool (8-Apr) : Struggling to figure out what text editor options are needed and which are 'nice to have'
Mucky Tundra (8-Apr) : *CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP*
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : WR who said he'd break Xavier Worthy 40 time...and ran slower than you
Mucky Tundra (2-Apr) : Who?
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : Texas’ WR Isaiah Bond is scheduled to visit the Bills, Browns, Chiefs, Falcons, Packers and Titans starting next week.
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : Spotting ball isn't changing, only measuring distance is, Which wasn't the issue.
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : The spotting of the ball IS the issue. Not the chain gang.
Mucky Tundra (2-Apr) : Will there be a tracker on the ball or something?
