Mike McCarthy Press Conference Transcript - March 12

(How big a priority was it to keep Clifton, and are you making efforts with Tauscher at all?)
We're glad to get Chad back. Really, the priority was to sign all of our free agents back. That did not change. I know just the way ... it wasn't everybody take a number, one through five or anything like that ... so we had the opportunity to try to sign everybody back. We were able to get Chad done. I feel Mark Tauscher is definitely not too far away, and hopefully we'll have some news for you there shortly, and no different with Ryan Pickett. We're focused on bringing our own free agents back, getting better as a football team, starting internally, and then we'll add another draft class to this group. We like where we are today, but the importance of the offseason program and keeping your own players has been our focus, and that time is upon us now.

(How much gas in the tank does Clifton have left?)
I anticipate Chad will be better this year physically than he was last year, because you can't discount the fact that he had a number of surgeries and the rehab that he went through at this time last year. The ability that he'll have to get into his training, increase his training at a higher rate earlier in the offseason I think will definitely help him. I know coming out of the season he definitely feels better this year than he did two years ago. The surgeries definitely gave him some relief, and we look for him to be a very productive player for us this year.

(Have you been busy with bringing in free agents for visits?)
Um, no.

(Less than usual this time of year?)
I haven't kept track.

(When you play quarterbacks like Warner, there are two schools of thought. You either throw even more at them, or you play coverage because they've seen it all. You seemed to play coverage in that game. Should you have turned it loose more in that game?)
I didn't have a problem with the way things were called, and if you've ever called a game at this level, there's other factors involved than just staying in one or two schools of thought. Down-and-distance plays in to it, what's going on in the other two phases around you plays into it. How your particular unit is playing. Are they making mistakes or are there injuries that have occurred. There's so many other factors that are involved in that. These are games that are in our past, but they're definitely games that we need to learn from, because anytime you have repeated mistakes or repeated experiences that happen again, to me that falls under my category of trying to make sure, I have to look and make sure I have enough training involved in our offseasons and our training camps and make sure our players are ready for those type of situations.

I didn't want to post the article in its entirety, so I copied what I thorught where the best/most interesting parts of the press conference.

Mike McCarthy sounds just like his daddy. Worthy son of a worthy father.

I found the part about Tauscher pretty interesting. Now, it could be just talk, but I believe that he meant what he said about getting him back.

I was pretty sure that we might try Lang at RT. Have sort of a transition year where you keep Clifton at LT, while sliding in a new guy at RT. Apparently, I was wrong, though.

The part that bothers me is it seems like he is content with the players from last year and isnt looking to improve with any other bodies beside the draft
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

Two things:
1. My first reaction was same as yours. This is NOT an OL good enough to be content.
2. Remember this is Mike "I was trained by Ari Fleischer to never say anything of value in a press conference" McCarthy. So maybe he isn't truly content; maybe behind closed doors he's bitching and moaning with great regularity to "get me some goddamn better lineman Ted, John, et al."
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

First, for the love of everything freaking breathing SHUT UP ABOUT ARI already. My god that's not even funny anymore. Can you say Hello 2010, it's not 2008 anymore. Thank you! Ok now to be more serious ... I've watched and read mm's pressers for well since he was hired. He hasn't changed much at all.

Second, our OL played very well once we had Clifton and Tauscher healthy. There's no reason to believe we won't this year as well. I think our OL will be fine with Clifton, Spitz, Wells, Sitton, Tauscher for THIS year. Year's 2011 and beyond I'm more concerned with.

Third, NO head coach and I mean NO head coach is EVER content with ANY talent level on their team. They ALWAYS want improvement, always.

Fourth, Protection adjustments need to be made by the QB, that can also make the OL look bad and we had several screw ups last season. Another thing, our RB runs with his damn head down half the time and runs into his own OL, that makes our OL look bad. Grant has more than 2400 yards in the last two years with that style, imagine if the dude looks UP while he's running.

Fifth, I think you're sexy.

wpr (17-Apr) : 7 days
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : sounds like Packers don't get good compensation, Jaire staying
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Nobody coming up with a keep, but at x amount
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (16-Apr) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (16-Apr) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (16-Apr) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded. He's never happy is he?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : two 1sts in 2022 and two 2nd's in 2023 and 2024
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers had fortunate last three drafts.
dfosterf (15-Apr) : I may have to move
dfosterf (15-Apr) : My wife just told the ancient Japanese sushi dude not enough rice under his fish
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I think a dozen is what I need
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Go fund me for this purpose just might work. A dozen nurses show up at 1265 to provide mental health assistance.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Maybe send a crew of Angels to the Packers draft room on draft day.
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I am the Angel that gets visited.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Visiting Angels has a pretty good reputation
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : what
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : WINNING IT, not someone else losing it. The best victory though was re-uniting with his wife
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : The manner in which he won it was just amazing and wonderful. First blowing the lead then getting back, then blowing it. But ultimately
Zero2Cool (12-Apr) : I'm guessing since the thumb was broken, he wasn't feeling it.
dfosterf (10-Apr) : Looking for guidance. Not feeling the thumb.
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : If they knew about it or not
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : I don't recall that he did which is why I asked.
Zero2Cool (10-Apr) : Guessing they probably knew. Did he have cast or something on?
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : Did they know that at the time or was that something the realized afterwards?
Zero2Cool (9-Apr) : Van Ness played most of season with broken thumb
wpr (9-Apr) : yay
Zero2Cool (9-Apr) : Mark Murphy says Steelers likely to protect Packers game. Meaning, no Ireland
Zero2Cool (8-Apr) : Struggling to figure out what text editor options are needed and which are 'nice to have'
Mucky Tundra (8-Apr) : *CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP*
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : WR who said he'd break Xavier Worthy 40 time...and ran slower than you
Mucky Tundra (2-Apr) : Who?
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : Texas’ WR Isaiah Bond is scheduled to visit the Bills, Browns, Chiefs, Falcons, Packers and Titans starting next week.
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : Spotting ball isn't changing, only measuring distance is, Which wasn't the issue.
Zero2Cool (2-Apr) : The spotting of the ball IS the issue. Not the chain gang.
