Tough get going

ESPN Films-Movies, Andell Entertainment and NFL Films are aiming to make "Lombardi," a drama about Vince Lombardi, one of the most famous coaches in the history of team sports in the U.S.

The plan is to release "Lombardi" in movie theaters the Friday between the conference championships and the Super Bowl in 2011, the 40th anniversary of the presentation of the Lombardi Trophy, which goes to the winner of the Super Bowl.

The vice president of ESPN Films-Movies, Ron Semiao, told Variety the aim is to promote the film during the playoffs.

"Our hope is to establish an annual franchise of an NFL-themed movie that comes out in theaters during that off week," Semiao said. "What better way to kick that off than with a film about the iconic coach they named the Super Bowl trophy after?"

Andell Entertainment is financing the development of the feature film, not ESPN.

Six years ago ESPN's entertainment division tried creating a movie about the Ice Bowl game between the Packers and Dallas Cowboys in 1967. ESPN announced the proposed deal with much fanfare and later announced with more hoo-hah that writer Joe Eszterhas had been hired to write the screenplay for the film.

Eszterhas dropped off the project, which never found a screenplay anyone wanted to make into a movie.

Now comes "Lombardi," which according to Variety will focus in part on the rivalry between Lombardi and Cowboys coach Tom Landry, whose calm demeanor contrasted with Lombardi's fiery personality.

Let's see if this one gets made.

I hope they use the actual footage for the football scenes. Actors playing the part of athletes always looks so "hokey". It would be nice to see a really good movie done, something that got more into the history and depth of what kind of man Vince Lombardi was. If they are going to throw together a grade B movie with gade B actors I would just as soon they forget it. I believe this would be an injustice to Vince because he worked so hard and motivated his players so hard to seek perfection, knowing it can't be reached, but that you would be better for it.

I'm not sure I'd want to watch this movie, since I don't think there's an actor in Hollywood who could cause me to suspend disbelief and actually make me think, even for a couple of hours, that he was Lombardi. We'll have to wait for the trailers.

De Niro to play Lombardi
By Bob Wolfley of the Journal Sentinel

March 9, 2010 2:22 p.m. |(4) Comments

Actor Robert De Niro is to play legendary coach Vince Lombardi in a motion picture to be released on the weekend between the conference championships and the Super Bowl in 2012.

ESPN announced De Niro's attachment to the project this afternoon.

The film, titled "Lombardi," is to be produced by ESPN Films, Andell Entertainment and the NFL.

ESPN also says in the release that screenwriter Eric Roth has joined the project, "which will chronicle Lombardi during the years he transformed the Green Bay Packers from the worst team in the National Football League into five-time NFL champions."

A few years ago, a film about the Ice Bowl between the Packers and Dallas Cowboys was to be made by ESPN, but it never was completed.

Late last year, a Broadway play based on Lombardi's life was announced to be in the works for this year as well.

I'll laugh if Lombardi suddenly makes a "you talkin' to me?" speech during the movie.

I know Robert de Niro won't be able to get me to suspend disbelief. I can't see how his style resembles Lombardi's at all.

De Niro will kick ass in the role. Trust me.

He's that rarest of breed among actors today -- can do both the lead and a character role ... and simultaneously if he has to.

I'm not sure there's another actor alive who comes close to his ability.
