Report: Cromartie traded to Jets for a conditional third-rounder

Cromartie gets a pretty sweet deal, too: He gets to be a cornerback for Rex Ryan, where he'll get to play all the man coverage he wants.

ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that it's a done deal. Antonio Cromartie is a Jet, and the Chargers get their 2001 third-round draft pick, which turns into a second-rounder if Cromartie and/or the Jets meet certain performance levels.

Good deal for the Jets? Well, I'll say this: I'm not going to doubt much of what Rex Ryan does right now. After the year he had, and the way he turned the Jets defense into a dominant unit, Rex Ryan could announce that he plans to start Grimace at free safety, and I'd just nod and say, "Do your thing, Rex."

Just hours before the deal was announced, the Jets released veteran cornerback Lito Sheppard, who was the incumbent second corner for the Jets, before being unceremoniously benched in the playoffs. Clearly, the second cornerback position was an area of need.

Cromartie's physical abilities have never been in doubt. He's big, strong, fast and physical. Injuries have hindered him, though, and the Chargers haven't always been enamored with his attitude.

If there's anywhere he'll succeed, though, it's with the Jets under Ryan.

Their heavy-blitzing, man-covering, rely-on-your-corners style is exactly what Cromartie wants. And there's no one better than Ryan at getting the most out of defensive players.

Once upon a time, Antonio Cromartie was labeled as a future shutdown corner in the NFL, and if he's ever going to become that, he's in the perfect situation for it.

That would give the Jets two, and that would be frightening for the rest of the league.

Traded for a third-rounder, and a conditional round at that? What a comedown for the erstwhile first-round pick!

Though I have to say the Chargers must be seriously desperate if they're trading him for a 2001 pick.

A 2001 pick? THEY'RES STUPID

But seriously, nice deal, Cromartie obviously wasn't welcome in San Diego anymore, and if anyone can squeeze that talent out of him, it's Rex Ryan.

Well I really thought the Jets were going to stay in the 3rd round and take Kareem McKenzie but I guess future player trades are too enticing not to subvert the laws of time travel.

I've read it was a 3rd in 2011.

To me that shows how eager the Bolts were to offload him.

I suspect the character concerns led to Ted Thompson (and the rest of the league) not to offer more.

Bad actor whose game has been in decline of late after peaking several years back. No thanks!

We don't need two threads about this exact topic (make that three, since you created another one in the NFL section, despite the fact my existing thread on this topic was the only new thread in the section last night 😛 ). Besides, now that he's already a Jet, it's a moot point anyway.

dfosterf (25-Jun) : of the folks that run this team. I do not recall Mark Murphy being subject to our vote.
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Ed Policy yay or nay is on the pre-approved ballot that we always approve because we are uninformed and lazy, along with all the rest
dfosterf (25-Jun) : Weird question. Very esoteric. For stockholders. Also lengthy. Sorry. Offseason.

Mucky Tundra (25-Jun) : And then he signs with Cleveland in the offseason
