Memories

I remembr listening to packers games on Armed Forc es radio network in the late 80's early 90's

When the Packers were on and I yelled "Touchdown", my wife would always say to me........"Favre to Sharpe"

I'd say "yep"

Such a tandem

Such memories

I disagree that Sharpe was the next Jerry Rice.. they were not the same type of receiver in my opinion.

Sharpe was an early version of Boldin today.. players that understood the passing game and coverages and could find the openings, where Jerry Rice set a defender up right from the first couple steps of his route.. he was that fluid and smooth in his route running and his moves.. he could twist the defender around like no one else yet.

Where they are similar is they had the hands, body control and strength the normally wasn't matched by the defender..

There is no doubt both should be in the HOF.. but IMO, they were a different type of receiver.

Yeah... listen. The whole Sharpe thing? That was my fault...

I was big into collecting football cards at the time, and I searched in vain for his for almost a year. Two days after I found and bought one he injured his neck and never played again.

Sorry...

Pack93z - Stylistically, apples and oranges. I think we're talking statistically, not stylistically.

Yeah, Sharpe was that great, no question. He was a different type of guy, Rice was more of a James Lofton type, whereas Sharpe was more of a Boldin. I agree with that. But damn, what could have been!
Although it is quite true that losing Sharpe forced Favre to look around for other recievers. Sharpe was kind of a security blanket for Favre. Remember in that playoff game against Detroit? Favre just threw it as far as he could and Sharpe ran underneath it.
Anyway, part of what made Sharpe great was his playing style. He would catch the ball two yards short of a first down, put his head down and run over somebody to get it. Remember he had that strap on his helmet? It connected his helmet to his shoulder pads to stabilize his neck. In a way, it was his own playing style that cause the injury.
Sterling was better than Shannon, by far.

The neck problem was something that occurred in college or he was born with it.
