Browns | Could be sleeper for Peppers
Wed, 10 Feb 2010 11:13:12 -0800

Chris Mortensen, of ESPN, reports the Cleveland Browns could be a sleeper to sign Carolina Panthers impending free-agent DE Julius Peppers during the offseason.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

Trust me for $$$ any player would play for any team for any coach, it's more like do we want to spend the big $$$ on Peppers?

It's not like the Packers would be the only team offering Peppers money. He'll be making a ton wherever he goes, and he's already very, very rich.

The Packers reportedly outbid everyone for Lavar Arrington in '06, but he took a lower offer to go to the Giants. It's not quite as simple as you make it out to be. These aren't struggling carpenters hanging out outside of the local Home Depot trying to find work.

I remember that. We only went after Woodson once Arrington took a lower offer from NY. Then came all the discussion of how nobody wants to play/live in GB, and how to stay competitive if free agency the Packers would have to offer like 15% more than any other team to land a particular FA. blah blah blah...

Sorry, but I have no idea how to go about finding that 4 years later. I believe it was Arrington himself who was bragging about wanting to go the Giants so bad that he took less money than GB offered, because he wanted to be able to pay the Redskins back, ala Brent Faver.

Here is an article on the topic.. no mention of how much we offered... but I recall that being the case as well..

Arrington spurns Packers

The Packers are out of the running to land linebacker LaVar Arrington.

The team was informed that the free agent planned to sign with another team, an NFL source confirmed Friday night.

There was no word on which team he was going to sign with, but he visited the New York Giants and underwent a physical Thursday.

Thompson wouldn't confirm it, but Arrington -- a three-time Pro Bowl selection -- had an offer on the table from the Packers, the source said.\

And another. . ... BTW.. this link is a look back at the beginning of the whining from down South. Yet they went to the NFC Championship game.. ironic eh.

Since he made those statements, the Packers have done almost nothing in free agency. They were in the running for Arrington, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, but the former Washington linebacker chose the Giants because he wanted to play in a big market and was unsure how competitive the Packers would be this season.

The Packers are still in the running for free-agent cornerback Charles Woodson, a four-time Pro Bowl selection, but they are battling Woodsons former Oakland coach, Jon Gruden, now with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, for his services. Woodson would provide a boost to the Packers defense, but it wouldnt do much for Favre on the offensive side.

check Andrew Brandts articles, I know he had written one about this whole situation on how he was on the phone with Lavars agent even as Lavar was meeting with the Giants and told the agent we will up our price again.

I also recall that Lavar wanted to get with Brett to hear right from his mouth if he was going to retire or not

EDIT

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/arrington-sounds-off.html

n deciding between the Packers and the Giants, we were led to believe that it was even and LaVar would decide based on the economics of the offers presented.

As I later found out, our economics were far more substantial than that of the Giants (as was the offer from the Eagles) yet he signed with New York.

The lure of staying on the East coast and playing the Redskins twice a year was a pull that overcame our better offer, despite our being told that it would not. .

I also recall fans on message boards going nutts that Ted didnt bring in Lavar...

Even as people were hitting SUBMIT on their post on that, Lavar was in the offices at 1265

I can't say I'm bothered much by the fact that Peppers is unlikely to come to GB.

Partly because I only care about the OL. 🙂

And partly because I think he's overrated. He may want to play a 3-4, but I'm not convinced he's that good at this stage of his career.

Now if Ted Thompson and company disagree with me, I have no problem with them spending a ton of $$$. They've proved me wrong enough times. Don't think its going to happen, though.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

dfosterf (3h) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (20h) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (20h) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (20h) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.

Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Oh snap!!!
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Even Stevie Wonder can see that.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Nah, you see Lions OC leaving to be HC of Bears is directly related to Packers.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ohhhhhhh Zero is in TROUBLE
packerfanoutwest (21-Jan) : Zero, per your orders, check Bearshome, not packershome
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Then he'll land with another team and flourish.

Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Bears are finalizing a deal to hire Ben Johnson as their head coach. (via @tompelissero )
Mucky Tundra (20-Jan) : Looks like Lions OC Ben Johnson is going to be the Bears coach
Mucky Tundra (20-Jan) : TD but another failed 2 pt conversion!
