Ok, how many of you are old enough to remember Ray Scott?

He was before my time I guess.

Trivia curve-ball looping in for a called strike on the very outside corner of the plate on my fellow geezer Wade.

Yes.

He was the play-by-play announcer for the Washington Senators just a couple of years after I moved there from Wisconsin. :thumbleft:

I would also bet that John Madden (John-"Who the hell is he?")couldn't answer that question "back in the day", but he could for many, many years subsequent, and the pure scientific nature of the methodology employed to ensure an unbiased result in this poll is something to be truly admired. :tongue3:

Sigh. I just spent twenty minutes trying to find a clip of the voice of the Lombardi Packers and couldn't find one.

If you've never heard a real playbyplay by a guy like Scott, you have absolutely no idea how far sports announcing has fallen.

Put it this way, do you remember the original Madden team with Pat Summerall, when Madden was still good.

Summerall succeeded Scott, and it was as big a step down as Emmitt Smith would be replacing the original John Madden. *That* is how good Ray Scott was.

When Ray Scott was doing play-by-play, the only position for Frank Gifford, the best of the original Monday Night Football threesome, was doing halftime highlights. And Gifford was better than Chris Berman back when the only ugly thing about Berman was his hairstyle. That's how good Ray Scott was.

Today, Foster, I'm glad I'm a geezer.

Wow......i remember him. He was the "voice" of most NFL films, if i am thinking of the right guy.
He had a voice that was PERFECT for it.
Guess that makes me an official "old guy".

You might be confusing him with John Fazenda, Cheesey (the predecessor to Sabol). Fazenda had a fantastic voice.

Scott did do a lot of play by play, both radio and TV. IIRC, he also was the voice of the Vikings (or was it the Twins) for awhile.

He was minimalism in the booth. "Starr. Dowler. Touchdown." Then silence. His radio time showed, he could make you "be there" with the fewest words imaginable, yet give an amazing amount of information re formation, personnel, down/distance, and all accurate.

You'd never get him missing player substitutions or yakking endlessly about the star of the day.

He also did Super Bowl I (which wasn't actually called the Super Bowl, then) for sure, and maybe a couple others. I can't remember when he got fired by CBS.

Must be what i remember. I know if you go to Lambeau Field, and walk down the stairs to the Packer HOF, you hear a clip of Scott calling one of the games from one of the speakers by the stairs.

He did Super Bowl II also.

I was referring to Madden as a linebackers coach for the Raydahs, btw.

I am sure Madden heard the play-by-play of his Super Bowl confrontation with Mr. Lombardi more than once after his team had their ass handed to them.

He commented years later about how awestruck he was to look across the field at Vince and say to himself (he was running the defense) "I'm coaching against Vince Lombardi, can you believe this?"

Living in Central IL at the time I did not get to hear him calling a game for the Packers. I have heard clips of his call since then.
I lived in Minney for a year back in 65 so I am sure I heard him doing a Twins game but I don't remember it for sure. But since baseball was my first love I had to have hear a broadcast or two.
