Here’s an interesting one: veteran CB Tramon Williams is visiting the Packers, the team he’s previously spent over a decade with. He’d add some depth and insurance to the secondary if signed. — Field Yates (@FieldYates) January 20, 2021

Williams came in to Green Bay on a private jet this morning and is expected to sign if everything goes right. He will add depth and experience to the secondary and could return punts if needed. https://t.co/FxkisJ9g6A

Williams was most recently with the Baltimore Ravens and actually played in their playoff loss to the Bills this past weekend. He was released by Baltimore on Monday.

Let's go.

Good move. Gute has been pulling out all the stops trying to improve the whole 53 roster. Right now Josh Jackson and Kadar Hollman are the 4-5 CBs. Jackson is rarely activated. Hollman is STs. Williams can strengthen both ST and CB depth.

And that's not all, activated 3 guess from the IR which goes them a 3 week practice window (which is the rest of the season), and the could be signed to the 53 if the team feels they're good enough. Though they might just be practice guys right now, unless they're wanted for STs.

They designated for return from injured reserve inside linebacker James Burgess, cornerback Kabion Ento and cornerback Parry Nickerson. All three become eligible to practice right away and can be activated to the 53-man roster any time between now and the Super Bowl.

Burgess was a regular on special teams and could get a call up this week if the coaches think he is physically ready.

I don't think this is going to help at all, unless he is going to coach on the sideline.

I think he's mainly to be the #4 CB in case one of the starting 3 get injured, because they don't seem to trust/like the other CBs to consistently have them active.

Also, possible be there to sucure punts... our returners have been questionable at times with just weather to catch it or not.

I like Tramon. I also like Desmond Howard, but I wouldn't put him back there for punts, lol. Clearly Tramon is much younger of the two. Tavon was brought here for a niche role in offense and to return. It just doesn't make sense how excited I've seen fans get over this. I don't think he'd see the field for more than half dozen plays.

After looking at his stats, for the most part Tramon hasn't been a very good returner. First, the only season he had more than a handful punt returns was all the way back in 2010 (41). The only other time he had double digit returns was 2009 and 2018 with 13. His return average is 9.0 but that is from his returns in 2007 and 2009. He hasn't had a kickoff return since 2009 when he returned 2 kicks for a 13 yard avg.

I think Tramon would be put back there solely because he hasn't had an issue fumbling and because Tavon fumbled one people are freaked out. Special Teams have been a sore spot for everyone, so it's understandable, lol.

Yeah, honestly if the Packers have a lead late in the game that they need to hold onto and are returning a punt, I would march Tramon out there and tell him to fair catch the thing and count on him not to muff it.

As mentioned, he should be good CB/S depth as well, and won't need much (if any) time to get up to speed in Pettine's defense.

Ah, I forgot to mention, he had 3 muffed punt returns. It was in 2018 when he had 12 chances.

Muffed or fumble? Muff is failing to secure the punt. Fumble being securing the punt and having later losing possession. Not that you don't know the difference, but explaining what I'm looking at.

The podcast I listened to called them muffed. The NFL website called them fumbles. Either case, he didn't catch the ball cleanly on 25% of his chances. That's extremely high. It's 3 seasons ago and he has not returned a punt since then so I don't know if he has improved or not.

It's quite the distinction though. They are not the same. It was one of the things people respect about Antonio "fair-catch" Chatman. He didn't muff the punts, but he didn't fumble it away either. He also wasn't getting yards, but you knew he wouldn't turn it over.

Random memory here -- I think it was Terrell Buckley who was cheered for simply catching a punt, lol.

Its a difficult roster move to quantify if he gets in game reps, would likely be situational, emergency or certain looks and packages.

Gamble in that sense. Busted assignment or his age showing and its all rah rah, makes a solid play/selection of plays and its a potential Americas Game moment.

Always good to have a well respected and liked veteran across (relatively) young position groups though. On that front, good move.

I'm guessing this means Josh Jackson and Hollman will be on the inactive list again, as both Tramon and STer CB Russell play over them.

So I'm guessing Tramon is the 4th CB... though a Safety could be the first backup option and move Sullivan to the outside.

They really seem to like DL Price on DL and Russell on STs.

Also interesting Dexter is released...
