My thoughts are if he's starting, we're screwed... late in the season street pick-up starting is normally a bad sign.
5 weeks left in the season isn't much time for patience's or learning, it's hard to learn mid-season, when the team doesn't have as much time as they like to prepare, much less teach.
Say What ?
Austin's not being an NFL rookie adds to his value to the team. He already knows how to run all of the pass routes, and as for learning the playbook, he will learn the basics of it for sure.
Austin will get work in practices, but he will be used to run the standard generic pass routes. QB/WR timing will get better as time moves forward. He may not be a "starter", but will be used as a plug n play specialist. He may not be used this or next week, but will become a valuable WR
before GB begins the playoff games in January.
Additionally, I fully expect that his speed will be used as the Kick Returner. He is already experienced and qualified to contribute at that position..
Learning is something that is ongoing. Austin will learn and his coaches will do their jobs and teach.
