He catches the ball about as often as MVS. Normally I would say it's a waste of time but then there's Tyler Ervin.

Here's the thing that always gripes me when people talk about players:

Quote:

In any case, Austin’s great timed speed (4.38 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the 2013 NFL Combine) is a noteworthy attribute.

That's 7 long years ago. He doesn't have 4.38 speed today. If he did, he wouldn't have been sitting at home all year long. At 29 years old after getting hit dozens of times a game, he might not even have 4.50 speed.

He may well still be fast but the only people who really know are the team officials who do the tryouts and they ain't talking. Not in Green Bay. Not in any place else.

Different team, different team chemistry. Time will tell if the change will benefit Austin and the Packers. .

Packers need a returner, I assume they're bringing him in to help fill in the shoes of the injured Ervin. Like Ervin he has spend some time as a RB and WR (but mostly WR).

Austin has played in similar schemes with time while with the Rams, at least his one year there when LaFleur was also their, but his numbers went way down that season, so that might not be a good thing.

I think he's just the bottom of the depth chart, returner, speed sweep and speed decoy at this point, but maybe returner.

Moving to a new team requires learning a new playbook, learning to work with new players/coaches. Starting Austin off as a Return Man makes sense as he has experience at it and playing Special Teams would be the quickest and easiest way to contribute ASAP. Learning the offense, the QB/s, and having them to learn you will not be "instant". Austin may be starter ready for the Dec. 27th Home game vs the Titans (and he might be an offense game factor).

Patience

My thoughts are if he's starting, we're screwed... late in the season street pick-up starting is normally a bad sign.

5 weeks left in the season isn't much time for patience's or learning, it's hard to learn mid-season, when the team doesn't have as much time as they like to prepare, much less teach.

Say What ?

Austin's not being an NFL rookie adds to his value to the team. He already knows how to run all of the pass routes, and as for learning the playbook, he will learn the basics of it for sure.

Austin will get work in practices, but he will be used to run the standard generic pass routes. QB/WR timing will get better as time moves forward. He may not be a "starter", but will be used as a plug n play specialist. He may not be used this or next week, but will become a valuable WR before GB begins the playoff games in January.

Additionally, I fully expect that his speed will be used as the Kick Returner. He is already experienced and qualified to contribute at that position..

Learning is something that is ongoing. Austin will learn and his coaches will do their jobs and teach.

They might try him at Kick Returner, but he's only brief experience there. He's a more accomplished Punt Returner, which is where I expect to see him sooner than later.

Let’s not forget Andre Rison! He cane in very late, and was huge in SB31.
A very late addition that paid off big time.
So who knows, maybe this pickup will help.

I guess I don't understand we how we can expect a guy to come in and do well right away in the system, when I have continually read from our contributors how it takes other guys 2-3 years to learn the system and become productive.

Bombs and slants are in any system, but terminology, hot reads, and adjustments are another matter. 12 needs to have confidence that a receiver will be where he is supposed to be, or he wont throw to him.

It's akin to someone calling a draft pick a bust before the player even suits up for a game. In other words, nothing to see.

He'll run that jet sweet stuff that Ervin runs when he's in there. Dude's a jitterbug. 5'8" but he's got quickness, moves, change of direction.

He's telling ya, you have to eat your own words...

But doesn't seem clear why he believes that, or what actual word you have to eat, as the player in question hasn't gotten on the field yet.... so... it seems out of context at minimum.

Hmmm. ok, but I still don’t get it it.

But thanks all for trying to explain.

I would think most of my posts had expectations for draft picks to achieve quickly. IIRC many posters believe it takes guys a couple of years as they are new to the system.

I am not predicting either way. I hope the guy does awesome, but given the sentiment of many, and given 12s proclivity to go with ‘the known quantity’, it is tough to expect immediate results at wide out.

I’m sure the guy isn’t as fast as he was when he was just coming out of college.
But there is fast, and football fast. Straight line speed is good, but a guy that can make football moves is very important. Look at Davante Adams. He makes moves on the field that jukes guys out of their jocks. Yet he’s not the fastest guy on the field.
MVS is more of a straight line fast guy.
Only time will tell how much (or little) the new guy will give.
To say someone will end up “eating crow” before any of us have any factual info on how Austin will play for the Packers is lame.
Right now all ANY of us have are opinions on the subject.

After listening to his opening press conference, my hopes are really low for him. He's probably just not good at press conferences.

Yeah I don't worry about press conferences. Their job is to be professional athletes not public speakers.
